We Nominate Matt Boyle For A Pulitzer Prize For Mississippi GOP Primary Coverage

Matthew Boyle

Breitbart’s Matthew Boyle has almost singlehandedly done what the establishment news media regularly failed to do – expose the insider manipulation of the Republican primary election process in Mississippi.
And for that we think Boyle deserves what many in journalism consider to be their profession’s highest award – a Pulitzer Prize.
Over the past 20 years The New York Times, The Washington Post and related publications have dominated the relevant Pulitzer Prize categories and the liberal online outlet “The Huffington Post” is the only web-based publication we can think of that has won a Pulitzer. About the only conservative or liberty minded publication that regularly shows-up in the Pulitzer finals is The Wall Street Journal.

Of course we don’t sit on the Pulitzer Prize Board. The fact that Boyle works for the conservative-leaning Breitbart organization and the fact that we unabashed conservatives at think his reporting is worthy of the prize might lead some to believe the idea is DOA. But there are some journalists with whom we’ve worked, such as The Wall Street Journal’s Paul Gigot and The Dallas Morning News’ Keven Ann Willey, who might appreciate Boyle’s coverage of the great fault line in today’s politics – and it’s not between Republicans and Democrats, but within the Republican Party itself.
Matthew Boyle’s reporting on the Mississippi Republican primary was not only insightful, it exposed the dark underbelly of how the Republican establishment will use any tactic and go to any length – including allegedly bribing Democrats to vote in the Mississippi Republican Senate runoff – to stay in power.
What Boyle revealed in article after article is that the GOP establishment, and especially those establishment Republicans who have made millions feeding at the federal trough, have no interest in actually accomplishing policy goals, such as cutting spending and balancing the budget, that have allegedly been Republican orthodoxy since Reagan was elected President in 1980.
And they are perfectly willing to join forces with Democrats and use the vilest race-baiting tactics of the Left to stay in power and keep the money flowing to powerful GOP establishment-aligned lobbyists, such as former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour and his extended family.
This is a story that the establishment media has generally failed to cover, and often gets wrong when it does cover it, because they tend to equate all Republicans, except the most liberal outliers like former Maine Senator Olympia Snowe, as “conservatives.”
Matt Boyle understands conservative politics in a way that few in the establishment media do and consequently his reporting has homed-in on the relationship between Senator Thad Cochran, who stands to become the Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee should Republicans gain control of the Senate, and his support from the lobbyists and special interests that stand make millions from keeping him in office; former Governor Barbour, his nephew Henry Barbour and their associated lobbying and political consulting clients.
But Boyle didn’t put his thumb on the scale and tilt his coverage, as we often see the establishment media do. He covered the missteps and rookie mistakes of the Chris McDaniel campaign just as thoroughly as he covered the vicious insider tactics of the Cochran campaign.
Here are just a few of the key Mississippi Republican Senate primary stories Matt Boyle broke or took national:

The Mississippi primary isn’t over – not by a long shot – and Matt Boyle’s reporting on the tactics the Republican establishment used in Mississippi have lit a fire at the conservative grassroots that won’t go out any time soon. For that Matt Boyle deserves the thanks of America’s liberty minded citizens, even if our push fails and he doesn’t get the recognition he deserves from his fellow journalists on the Pulitzer Prize Board.
