Cruz, Sessions, Lee & Tea Party Patriots Wade In Against McConnell DHS Funding Betrayal

Yesterday we told you about Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s plan to pass a “clean” DHS funding bill and then attempt to bring up a separate bill that purports to defund President Obama’s unconstitutional executive amnesty.

McConnell said he wanted to take away Democrats’ excuse for not voting against Obama’s 2014 actions, which several centrist Democrats had previously criticized.

We called this the old (and failed) Capitol Republican tactic of trying to use legislative slight-of-hand to simply get him by the immediate pressure point – the February 27 deadline for funding the Department of Homeland Security.

Charles Hurt of The Washington Times has a better, and somewhat more colorful, description of McConnell’s ploy:

Graceful capitulation.

Run the white flag up the Senate flagpole and then use said flagpole to shaft the American people, said Hurt, or, at least, the North American people living legally in the United States of America.

Now Senator Ted Cruz, Senator Mike Lee and Senator Jeff Sessions have all indicated opposition to the McConnell plan.

At the lunch, few Republicans were prepared  to criticize McConnell’s plan. An outspoken foe of Obama’s immigration policies, Utah's Mike Lee, asked pointed questions about McConnell’s strategy, but has yet to come out publicly against the leadership plan.

Cruz, released the following statement regarding Department of Homeland Security funding:

“It is both reckless and irresponsible for Democrats to continue to filibuster funding for the Department of Homeland Security in a misguided attempt to preserve President Obama's executive amnesty, which has already been rejected by the voters and declared illegal by a federal court. The federal court injunction was a major victory for the rule of law, and we need to hold the Administration accountable to comply in every respect. Leadership's current plan – to pass clean DHS funding and separate legislation barring executive amnesty – is a mistake. Congress is obliged to use every constitutional check and balance we have to rein in President Obama's lawlessness, and that includes both our confirmation authority over nominees and the power of the purse.”

Senator Jeff Sessions allegedly took on McConnell at the Senate Republicans’ weekly luncheon and later said, “The most potent power of Congress is the power of the purse,” said Sen. Jeff Sessions, Alabama Republican, adding that lawmakers have “a duty not to fund anything that is unconstitutional or illegal, which this [executive action] is.”

Speaker Boehner has not directly addressed whether he’d put a stand-alone funding bill on the floor, and several Republican leadership sources say they favor several short-term measures to try to keep the heat on the White House. According to POLITICO one senior House Republican, who is close to party leaders and spoke anonymously to discuss strategy, said the Senate’s plan to send two bills to the House is “a joke.”

To further complicate matters for McConnell the grassroots army of the Tea Party Patriots yesterday released a call to action saying:

Throughout the election cycle Republicans vowed to do everything they could to stop the President's overreach. Now, the Republicans in the Senate under Majority Leader McConnell's guidance are playing games. Today we have learned that Sen. McConnell's plan is to bring a bill to the Senate floor that would fully fund the Department of Homeland Security without defunding executive amnesty!

Congress has the "power of the purse" and is responsible for serving as a check on the President's actions. We have a very narrow window of time to put a stop to President Obama's executive amnesty, and Congress needs to act now!

The statement from Tea Party Patriots’ Jenny Beth Martin concluded by asking Tea Party Patriots to call Sen. McConnell and Speaker Boehner to let them know that you want Congress to defund executive amnesty. No more games!  Remind them of their oath to support and defend the Constitution and urge them to vote on one bill that funds the Department of Homeland Security, while stripping funds from President Obama's unilateral amnesty.

Please call your Representative and Senators TODAY (the Capitol Switchboard is 1-866-220-0044) tell them you want a strategy to WIN the battle against Obama's unconstitutional executive amnesty, and that means DHS must be prohibited from spending any money on implementing that unconstitutional presidential power grab.

Birds of a feather

flock together. We're talking about moral cowardice on the part of the GOP leadership in both chambers. McConnell, Boehner, McCarthy, and especially Mr. (I didn't know I spoke at a White Supremacist meeting, until I got found out) Scalise. Primary them!
