Propaganda Is Directing Us Leftward Into The Abyss - Here's How To Fight Back

Meerloo Quote

In a compelling essay just out on The Federalist, Stella Morabito argues that American conservatives are by and large clueless about propaganda methods and tactics. And it shows.

Morabito points out that there are virtually no conservative social psychologists around. You’d think once a liberal social psychologist hits the public over the head with this fact some on the Right would take notice and at least try to get clued in.

Meanwhile, the Left has been employing social psychology and depth psychology on the masses for decades. President Obama’s campaign staff was filled with social psychologists. In this context, those who believe conservatives can subsist on reason and logic alone are kidding themselves. It’s no wonder GOP leaders are caving on so many principles, and being absorbed so easily into the Left’s machine.

Of course the cluelessness of the Right to the tactics of the Left’s propaganda machine is not a new phenomenon.

As CHQ Chairman Richard A. Viguerie documented in his latest book, TAKEOVER, conservatism has long been infected with what Morton Blackwell, founder and President of the Leadership Institute calls the “Sir Galahad Theory of Politics”: “I will win because my heart is pure.”

Many on the Right seem to believe that being right, in the sense of being logically correct, is sufficient to win, and that if we conservatives can logically demonstrate that our candidates are of higher character and our ideas are logically sound then voters will agree that conservative policies would be better for our country, and somehow victory will fall into our deserving hands like a ripe fruit from a tree.

The Left almost never relies on logic to support their ideas and policies, which are almost all based on feelings and emotions – and their candidates win by appealing to those great motivators of human conduct.

This is how, for example, Democrats can claim to support equal rights for women and homosexuals at the same time they actively work to bring millions of Muslim immigrants to America, who engage in female genital mutilation and would execute homosexuals by throwing them off buildings, as they do in the Islamic State’s Caliphate, if they could.

The logic of not allowing immigrants in who oppose everything liberty under the Constitution stands for is completely eclipsed by the emotional appeal of helping the allegedly oppressed people from the war-torn Middle East.

And this is also why political correctness, “hate” speech labels and laws and other attempts to limit free expression and First Amendment liberty is essential to the Left’s agenda.

Free expression is always the prime target of tyrants because it promotes logic, the search for truth, and friendship. America is exceptional precisely because it rejects the tyrants’ rule.

Yet as our speech becomes more restricted, we end up more separated from one another and more susceptible to mass delusions. As Dutch psychiatrist Joost A. M. Meerloo wrote in “The Rape of the Mind: The Psychology of Thought Control, Menticide, and Brainwashing” (1956): “Where thinking is isolated without free exchange with other minds, delusion may follow.” He added, chillingly, “Is this not what happened in Hitler Germany where free verification and self-correction were forbidden?”

“The totalitarian mind is like the schizophrenic individual; it has a contempt for reality. Think for a moment of Lysenko’s theory and its denial of the influence of heredity. The totalitarian mind does not observe and verify its impressions of reality; it dictates to reality how it shall behave, it compels reality to conform to its fantasies.”

Morabito concludes by arguing that “Resistance to tyranny is not as futile as submission to tyranny.”

Quoting Meerloo she says, “Just as a soldier must know how to handle his physical weapons, so the politicians must know how to face and handle the mental strategy of human relationships and diplomacy. He will have to become aware of the pitfalls in all human communication and the frailties of his own mind.”

In retrospect, it’s tragic that virtually all well-positioned people of goodwill seem to have been unaware of that warning, or able to effectively act on it. Worse, many end up caving to tyrants because they are unaware of the tactics on the propaganda battlefield.

Our hope, as Meerloo and Morabito argue, is in the reality that human rebellion and dissent cannot be forever suppressed: “They await only one breath of freedom in order to awake once more.”

We urge you to read Stella Morabito’s essay “How To Escape The Age Of Mass Delusion” in its entirety and then use the tools it proposes to confront and battle the tyranny of political correctness and Leftist propaganda wherever you find them.
