Defunding Planned Parenthood: The GOP Leadership’s Next Self-Inflicted Crisis

Call it, as our friend Tony Perkins president of the Family Research Council did, the “show vote showdown,” but the lies and perfidy of the Capitol Hill Republican leadership are finally catching up with them, and their next self-inflicted crisis will be funding Planned Parenthood in the soon-to-be-passed bill to fund the government for the next fiscal year.

Planned Parenthood video 5Conservatives have long-decried the “show votes” by which establishment Republicans make it look like they are doing one thing, but actually do exactly the opposite.

Claiming to be the Pro-Life Party, while funding Planned Parenthood has been one of the Capitol Hill Republican majority’s most shameful and hypocritical acts. And it has often been masked by show votes where Republicans are given the opportunity to go to the floor to rail against abortion while their “leaders” quietly maneuver to make sure your tax money keeps flowing to the organization that has industrialized that murder – Planned Parenthood.

To their shame Capitol Hill conservatives have not previously made defunding Planned Parenthood a “line in the sand” issue, but the release of the ghoulish videos documenting Planned Parenthood’s trafficking in human baby parts made ignoring the immorality of giving taxpayer money to murderers impossible.

But led by our friend Rep. Jim Bridenstine of Oklahoma, who was as far as we know, was the first to say publicly he would not vote for any funding bill that included money for Planned Parenthood, and now backed by the House Freedom Caucus, Capitol Hill conservatives have now finally drawn that line in the sand.

In a statement released yesterday Freedom Caucus members said, “Given the appalling revelations surrounding Planned Parenthood, we cannot in good moral conscience vote to send taxpayer money to this organization while still fulfilling our duty to represent our constituents. We must therefore oppose any spending measure that contains funding for Planned Parenthood.”

This puts real votes in the House and commitment behind the effort to defund Planned Parenthood – and it is being backed-up by a serious group of grassroots conservative organizations and leaders.

A letter to House “leaders” signed by CHQ Chairman Richard Viguerie and the leaders of dozens of other conservative organizations put the case for a real measure to defund Planned Parenthood this way, “We urge you to move legislation to remove federal funding from Planned Parenthood, or at the very least, a moratorium on funding PPFA, and attach such a measure to must-pass legislation in September in order to help guarantee the Senate votes again to defund this abortion giant… It is time for America to wash its hands of the blood money we offer to PPFA year after year.”

The response from establishment Republican “leaders” has been underwhelming to say the least.

Capitol Hill insiders report Speaker Boehner’s Chief of Staff arrogantly dismissed inquiries from conservatives about defunding Planned Parenthood at a recent senior staff meeting.

Senator Cruz – and Tony Perkins – are right. It is time for a “show vote showdown.”

However, for five years, Republican leaders have been in the business of making the other side's job easier. Democrats don't even have to work to get their way anymore -- they simply threaten to block a bill and wait for the GOP to cave, and Senator Ted Cruz told us flat out “McConnell will fund Planned Parenthood.”

“The right answer here is not the Washington solution of a meaningless show vote. ‘Let’s have a meaningless vote, let’s appoint a commission, let’s gaze at our navels.’ That’s not the solution that makes sense,” Cruz said. “We should not be spending taxpayer funds to fund an ongoing criminal enterprise.”

“In Washington those that want to do nothing always blame the pressure to deliver results on politics,” Cruz said.

“President Obama has embraced the radical position ... to try to shut down the entire federal government if this one private organization does not get taxpayer money,” Cruz said. “It is only in the twisted, inverted logic of the Washington Beltway that anyone other than Barack Obama would bear responsibility for that shutdown.”

At some point, Congress has to do what's right -- not just from a political standpoint, but from a moral one, and on defunding Planned Parenthood that time is now. If there’s a government shutdown, better that than continuing to make every American taxpayer complicit in the murder of thousands of babies and the trafficking of their dismembered bodies.
