Speaker’s Race Still Wide Open – Just Say NO To Paul Ryan

Despite the Washington political classes attempted coronation of Wisconsin establishment Republican Paul Ryan as Speaker the election is far from over. Principled limited government constitutional conservative Daniel Webster of Florida is still in the race for the Speaker’s gavel, and he and his conservative supporters are not giving up.

It takes 218 votes to elect the Speaker, if every member of the House is present and voting. That means it takes 30 Republicans to vote against the establishment choice, merely voting “present” isn’t enough, to Paul Ryandefeat establishment Republican Paul Ryan.

Back in January, 25 Republicans voted against John Boehner and the number of those dissatisfied with the establishment Republican “leadership” of the House has only grown since then.

And while grassroots conservatives have expressed outrage that some members of the House Freedom Caucus have abandoned Daniel Webster and expressed support for the establishment’s anointed candidate it is important to remember that when the chips were down in January those individuals, such as Ohio Representative Jim Jordan, did not step up and vote against Boehner either.

So why keep up the fight?

It is important to remember that this battle isn’t about personalities or to a large extent about the details of Paul Ryan’s many anti-conservative positions – it is about restoring the House to its proper role in the constitutional order of our government.

And of all the names that have been floated for Speaker Daniel Webster is the only one who has specifically said that is his goal and the motivating factor in his campaign for Speaker.

And that hasn’t changed from day one of his candidacy.

Webster, the former Speaker of the Florida House, told Breitbart News why he is still running despite the entire Washington establishment pushing for Ryan’s candidacy.

“I am committed to governing in a principled, member-driven manner,” Webster told Breitbart News on Monday evening. “I am running for Speaker because the transformation of the way we do business is possible if we seize this opportunity.”

Unlike Ryan, notes Breitbart’s Matt Boyle, Webster has very publicly articulated reforms he would make to the House GOP conference structure. Specifically, he told Breitbart News in a recent exclusive interview, he wants to spread power away from the Speaker’s office toward the membership of the House.

“I have one desire: That is to have a principle-based, member-driven Congress. Period. That’s what I want,” Webster said in an exclusive interview with Breitbart’s Boyle. “Really, right now, the default of every legislative body I’ve been to—and I’ve been to a lot of them—is a power-based system as opposed to principle-based. That works too, you can do it that way where a few people at the top of the pyramid make all of the decisions. We’d rather see a flattened down pyramid of power and spread out the base so every member has an opportunity to be successful.”

Paul Ryan is easily expected to win the nomination of the GOP conference with a bare minimum of 125 votes on Wednesday. But as Matt Boyle explained, Ryan may—depending on whether Webster can rally enough Republicans around him—run into trouble on the House floor where just 30 Republicans voting for Webster would derail his bid for Speaker.

If you want an end to government by planned crisis, where a small group of insiders makes every decision and then imposes it top down through threats and legalized bribery on every other Member of Congress then we urge you to contact your Representative and demand they vote for Daniel Webster for Speaker.
