Outsiders vs. Insiders: Betsy DeVos and Hillary Clinton -- a Tale of Two Washington Women

With the journalism industry’s constant hysteria surrounding President Donald Trump and the hapless Republican congressional leaders, sometimes you have to look closely to find news of any positive changes going on in Washington these days. But judging by the amount of coverage Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has received of late, there must be some sort of smoke associate with the media’s fire.

You may recall DeVos was one of a handful of Trump cabinet nominees who drew particular scorn from Senate Democrat inquisitors during her confirmation hearings last winter. Of course because DeVos is wealthy the keepers of the status quo assumed she’s out-of-touch with the average public school student and couldn’t Tweet on DeVospossibly handle the job of steering federal education policy.

But what her enemies were really after was the threat DeVos poses to the money and power of the leftist public education junta that fears any kind of reform and improvement to the hopelessly broken academic establishment.

As would be expected they’re digging deep into their bag of tricks to portray DeVos as the worst thing since…well, Donald Trump. The reactionary left is basically accusing DeVos of being anti-woman on America’s college campuses.

They’re wrong. David French wrote last weekend at National Review, “Education Secretary Betsy DeVos announced that the Trump administration would shortly begin a regulatory rulemaking process designed to protect college students from sexual assault while also protecting the fundamental constitutional rights of the accused…

“Judging from the Twitter reaction to DeVos’s remarks, you would have thought that she’d declared open season on young women on campus. Under the hashtag #StopBetsy, ideologues and celebrities declared that DeVos was taking the ‘next step on our path to authoritarianism.’

“Or, in the words of the reasonable non-hysterical folks at the Women’s March, she was ‘making campuses safer for rapists.’ The makers of a deeply flawed campus-rape documentary called ‘The Hunting Ground’ slammed DeVos, saying, ‘Her proposal should scare the hell out of every parent in this country with a college bound child — schools will become much more dangerous places for their children.’”

As the parent of two college-aged women I should be one of those who’s had the “hell” scared out of me. If I relied on the left for advice I’d be terrified to allow any female out of the house let alone permit them to swim in a sea of testosterone-driven males seeking higher learning.

What did DeVos do, exactly? She announced the Trump administration was ending a six year-old Obama policy that dramatically decreased the standard of proof needed for a sexual assault conviction in campus rape cases. Further, DeVos said she was fully restoring constitutional due process rights (cross-examine the accuser, etc.) to those accused of committing a crime.

What, give young males their rights back? Oh the horrors! It’s not like DeVos granted a universal “Get out of jail free” card, is it?

French’s article details the greater societal dilemma with the media-generated impression that all college campuses are in reality organized rape factories where one in five female students are subjected to some form of illegal encounter during their years in the college and university system. The National Review writer labels the studies that make up the foundation of such assertions “junk science” and proceeds to lay out the real facts to counter them.

Underlying this and other matters concerning DeVos in particular, the left’s real intentions are laid bare before the truth. Liberals couldn’t care less about protecting anyone as long as their “all men are bad” feminist narrative is corroborated and advanced to subjugate the “enemy” – in this case, college males. The stereotypical view that young men are beer swilling sex obsessed misogynistic frat boys who hunt women like a snake stalks its prey is all the left has to support its contentions.

The facts always get in the way, however.

Anyone who’s spent years on a college campus knows that some sexual crimes are committed, but the incidents are the exception rather than the norm. The legal system is more than capable of handling the genuine cases and contrary to the claims of the extremists, all accusations are taken seriously. I should know – as a student in the late 80’s I worked in the campus police department.

All DeVos did was propose to restore rights to the accused, not grant free license for sexual predators to add notches to their bedpost.

Contrast how the left treats DeVos with the way they all-but worship Hillary Clinton. The failed 2016 Democrat nominee is shown as a tragic hero whose lifelong dream was stolen from her by the prejudicial Electoral College along with tens of millions of “deplorable” people who were out to get her.

Katherine Timpf of National Review wrote of Hillary’s new book (coming out this week), titled What Happened, “Hillary Clinton isn’t upset for the party — she’s upset for herself, and that couldn’t be more transparent. In fact … Clinton even blames President Obama for not allowing her to hit Bernie [Sanders] harder, saying: ‘Every time I wanted to hit back against Bernie’s attacks, I was told to restrain myself. My team kept reminding me that we didn’t want to alienate Bernie’s supporters. President Obama urged me to grit my teeth and lay off Bernie as much as I could. I felt like I was in a straitjacket.’”

For being in a straitjacket Hillary sure said a lot of mean things about Bernie. Come on.

I must admit, thinking of Hillary lashing out at fellow Democrats makes me chuckle. It’s kind of like that scene in the movie “The Last Samurai” when Tom Cruise’s character is surrounded by samurai warriors and almost certainly would have been killed but for the actions of the Japanese leader to spare his life because the American reminded him of a fierce fighting tiger.

In Hillary’s case Obama is the warrior leader restraining the troops and she is the fighting “tiger.” What a buffoon.

But why would Hillary need to hit harder against Bernie in any case – didn’t she already have the nomination sewed up? Wasn’t the party establishment firmly in her pantsuit pocket already? Didn’t poor Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the rest of the corrupted Democrats at party headquarters (as revealed through their Wikileaks emails) make it clear Bernie wasn’t going to win under any scenario?

Why is Hillary reopening the old wounds now?

Timpf wasn’t impressed with Hillary’s charade. She concluded, “Now, I do understand that such a shocking, humiliating loss must be difficult to process. But if Clinton really cared about her party, then she’d find a means of catharsis other than a publicly damaging Tour of Petty that threatens to drag Democrats down even further. Her self-serving hypocrisy is clear to anyone who’s watching, and the fact that she lacks the self-awareness to see it is so Hillary it hurts.”

You had to figure Hillary wasn’t going to let the election defeat go quietly. She’s a Clinton. Clintons find ways to win elections – or at least Bill did. And she’s a woman, right? Hillary believed she deserved the presidency simply because she was a different gender than any other candidate in American history. It was her time. It didn’t matter that even many of her voters saw Hillary as a corrupted spineless politician who hid her physical maladies and called a quarter of the country “deplorables.”

And because Hillary is that feminist icon and embodies all the right identity politics causes she’s a conqueror to the left. She’s a virtue signaler of the highest order.

In contrast Betsy DeVos believes in due process and school choice which makes her a pariah to the Hillary worshippers. DeVos also serves in the administration of the most hated woman-abusing man of all time. It’s like a tale of two women.

DeVos and Clinton might as well inhabit two different planets for the divergent reactions they engender. One leftist “civil rights” nutcase even said last week he wouldn’t mind if DeVos herself were raped.

Bradford Richardson of the Washington Times reported, “Rob Ranco, a partner at the Carlson Law Firm, suggested Mrs. DeVos does not fully grasp how serious of a crime rape is, and that she might come to a different policy conclusion if she did.

“’I’m not wishing for it… but I’d be ok if #BetsyDevos was sexually assaulted,’ Mr. Ranco said in a tweet on Friday evening. ‘Perhaps Betsy doesn’t understand how horrible rape is,’ Mr. Ranco said in another tweet. ‘She’s made the world more dangerous for my daughters. I need her to understand.’

“’Make the world more dangerous for my daughters — intentionally — and your well being is not my concern,’ he continued. ‘Full stop.’”

Reading Ranco’s words makes one feel a lot more confident about the legal profession, doesn’t it?

The difference in the left’s treatment of DeVos and Hillary Clinton is hypocritical but hardly surprising. It’s just part of the greater culture’s struggle to overcome political correctness and identity politics to find a place where most people can live in harmony.

It used to be the Constitution brought Americans together but I fear that’s no longer true. These days, as Betsy DeVos demonstrated, returning to our country’s founding principles only brings you scorn, condemnation and evil wishes from people who seek to use the system for their own aims.

If Hillary Clinton had won last year’s election it might’ve been even worse; but right now, it’s still pretty bad.
