Del. Bob Marshall Releases Letter Opposing Teaching Transgenderism To Kindergarteners

Delegate Bob Marshall released the following letter he sent to a parent in response to proposals to teach transgenderism to young children and to add “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” to all school policies affecting students, teachers and staff in Prince William County Schools.

Re:  Teaching Transgenderism to Kindergarteners

Bob MarshallDear Parent:

Boys in Prince William County Schools will be able to access showers, locker rooms, rest rooms, and sports teams previously allowed only for girls by a 5-3 vote of the Prince William School Board (June 21) which added “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” to all school policies affecting students, teachers and staff.

My opponent, Democrat candidate Danica Anthony Roem, who “transitioned from male to female,” spoke in favor of this policy before the School Board four times.  I spoke against this new policy as a parent and grandparent who believes children’s privacy must be protected.

The ACLU wrote Prince William Schools claiming the “school board faces potential liability … if it excludes transgender students from using the same restrooms, locker rooms, and other sex segregated school spaces as other students.”

The General Assembly can override the school board next year.

If elected, I will vote against any effort to permit biological boys to use the girls’ showers, locker rooms, or restrooms facilities, and vice-versa regardless of a claim to be transgender. My transgender opponent Danica Roem thinks such boys should use any facility previously allowed only for girls, including sports teams which will take scholarships away from girls.

The terms “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” are nowhere in The Code of Virginia. Legal Counsel for the General Assembly advised me it is anyone’s guess how these words will translate into policy. He pointed out that the Obama Administration defined being transgender as anything from thinking you are the opposite sex, to actually having surgery to mimic the opposite sex.

Danica Roem was asked by Larry O’Connor on his 9/29/17 radio show if kindergarteners should learn about transgender issues.  Danica Roem answered:

“Hi, this person is only five years old, this person is transgender, and that, you know, and then we just explain that is what that means, and that’s it.  Is it age appropriate?  You know, what’s the way that it is being taught? You know, are you, do you have real people who are coming into the class to talk about it?”

Danica also told Larry O’Connor that he agreed with the Virginia High School League policy that allows males who identify as female to compete against girls for female athletic scholarships.

The claim that transgender students need special protection is bogus.  In 2005 my HB 2879 passed and became law which set conduct codes against bullying and required parents be told if their child was bullied or bullied another for any and all reasons.

I asked Prince William County Schools how many cases of discrimination were found against transgendered students or teachers in the last five years.  There were none!   This policy is not a shield to protect such students or teachers.  It is a hammer to compel acceptance of the transgender ideology and agenda by everyone, regardless of your conscience or your First Amendment rights.

Danica Roem urged opening up locker rooms, showers and bathrooms to transgender students.   I find that objectionable and intolerant of the views of those who want sex-separated facilities.

The National Center for Transgender Equality endorsed my Democrat opponent.  They want to remove “male” or “female” from birth certificates, driver’s licenses, passports, etc.   And they want tax-paid sex changes, genderless pronouns, and mandatory transgender training in schools and foster care.  Already some states have passed some of these laws!

Fairfax County wants 7th graders to learn “definitions for sexual orientation terms, heterosexuality, homosexuality, and bisexuality; and the gender identity term transgender;” and 8th graders to be taught “development of individual identity … includes … sexual orientation and gender identity.”

DC schools advise “Students may choose to have their parents participate in this [transgender “sex change”] process, however parental participation is not required.”  Minnesota now tells teachers to not say “boys” or “girls,” only “students” or “scholars;” and that “age and maturity should never be a basis for denying a transgender student an opportunity to transition …”

The incidence of self-harm among transgender persons is 40+%.  Almost all teens who experience gender confusion outgrow the feelings naturally.  Children should not be indoctrinated by a transgender curriculum in public school.  Nor do I think children who are incapable of giving fully informed consent should receive risky sterilizing operations and ten years of hormones to switch their sexual appearance.

I write out of concern for our young and innocent children.  The General Assembly can prevent the transgender ideology from being taught in public school classrooms.   My opponent and I clearly differ on this and other related important issues.

I ask for your vote on November 7 or early in person at the Prince William registrar on Lee Avenue in Manassas or the Haymarket/Gainesville library on Lightner Rd. if you are unable to vote on November 7th.
