Setting The Record Straight On Trump’s Charlottesville Remarks

As we should expect two-plus years into the Age of Trump, Democrat politicians and their allies in the establishment media never choose to tell the truth about Trump or what he says if a lie will better serve their purposes.

The latest Democrat politician to use this tactic is former Vice President Joe Biden, who during the announcement of his third campaign for president, made a point of lying about and misquoting what President Trump said in the aftermath of the Antifa-inspired violence on August 12, 2017.

In his launch video, Biden flat-out lied about what President Trump said, claiming Trump said there were “very fine people on both sides” of the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally.

Biden said the two sides to which Trump was referring were, on one side neo-Nazis, and on the other side were those protesting the neo-Nazis. At this point said Biden, he “knew the threat to this nation was unlike any I’d ever seen in my lifetime.”

Here’s what President Trump really said, courtesy of a Larry Elder column for Real Clear Politics:

In his widely misquoted press conference three days after Charlottesville, Trump said there were "very fine people" on "both sides" of the issue of whether it is appropriate to display Confederate monuments in pubic locations. Here is what Trump said: "Excuse me, they didn't put themselves down as neo-Nazis, and you had some very bad people in that group. But you also had people that were very fine people on both sides. You had people in that group -- excuse me, excuse me. I saw the same pictures as you did. You had people in that group that were there to protest the taking down of, to them, a very, very important statue and the renaming of a park from Robert E. Lee to another name." In case there was any doubt, Trump, in response to another question, said, "I'm not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists, because they should be condemned totally" (emphasis added).

And, as we explained in our article “Misusing Robert E. Lee,” President Trump was absolutely right about Robert E. Lee.

Not only was Lee a brilliant general whose campaigns are still studied at military institutions around the world, he was a voice of moderation and patient compliance by the Southern people after the war and during Reconstruction.

In his public letters, a number of which were reprinted in newspapers, he urged that "all should unite in honest efforts to obliterate the effects of war and to restore the blessings of peace."

Lee vowed to do "all in my power to encourage our people to set manfully to work to restore the country, to rebuild their homes and churches, to educate their children, and to remain with their states, their friends and countrymen."

Lee's code of conduct demanded submission to federal authority. With characteristic self-discipline, he put the past behind him and moved forward. Many southerners proved willing to follow Lee's example and through them the United States was not only reunited but rebuilt into the preeminent military and economic power it is today.

Erasing Robert E. Lee from history – or celebrating him as a symbol of “white nationalism” – is a grave error; not only does it distort history to suit the purposes of elements in society that Lee abhorred, it misuses one of the greatest symbols of the social compact that reunited the country after four years of brother against brother bloodshed and hatred.

The establishment media, especially CNN, MSNBC and various other fake news purveyors have been working overtime to sell the idea that Americans committed to preserving Civil War history are somehow associated with white supremacy and Neo-Nazism. And that Neo-Nazis are part of the conservative movement and that the racism and hate they display is a pervasive sickness in American culture and politics.

However, no matter what label Neo-Nazis put on themselves, there’s nothing “right” or conservative about their ideas or their leaders.

Indeed, as Dinesh D’Souza proved through his book and movie, “Death of a Nation,” the ideas propounded by such white supremacist leaders Jason Kessler and Richard Spencer are thoroughly grounded in Leftist and Socialist ideology.

As D’Souza explained in a C-SPAN interview* “What I am contesting is the meaning of that event [the Charlottesville riot]. Because, from the left’s point of view this was right wing white supremacy, and that was the whole point for Trump to condemn it. I deny that. I deny that, and I deny it, based on a close analysis of who was there and who these white supremacists are, and in this book, “Death of a Nation, I go through the list.”

“Jason Kessler, the founder, the organizer of – of Charlottesville, turns out to be an Obama activist, and an Occupy Wall Street guy.”

D’Souza further explained in the C-SPAN interview* “Now, we move on to the poster boy of white supremacy, Richard Spencer. This guy is so controversial, that when he went to speak in Florida, the governor declared a state of emergency. So, I interview him and its riveting, it’s about four minutes in the movie. And I asked him a series of questions. It’s very illuminating.”

“Does he believe all men are created equal? ‘No.’”

“I say, ‘Does he believe in individual dignity? ‘No.’”

“Does he believe in the right to life? ‘No.’”

“Where do rights come from? He says ‘Well, they don’t come from God.‘”

“So, where to do they come from?  He said, ‘They come from the government.’”

“He is a statist. He believes the government gives you your rights.”

“And I ask him ‘What do you think of Reagan?’. He goes ‘Terrible president‘.”

“I go ‘Who are your favorite presidents?’ He lists a bunch of Democrats.”

“I go ‘Well, those are all Democrats.’. He goes ‘Yeah, I know. But it’s just a party.'”

“And, he’s naming people like Andrew Jackson, who was the founder of the Democratic Party. The point I’m trying to make is that the white supremacists are not conservative. They are not conservative in the modern, American sense of conservative. They are unrecognizable to a normal conservative, and that’s obvious from the movie, so what I’m doing really, through a combination of history, and investigative journalism, is contesting these prevailing narratives, but I’m doing it in a responsible and civil way.”

So how did these Leftists, who identify with Germany’s National Socialist Party become identified as being part of the Right or conservative movement?

The first and most important reason is that conservatives and Neo-Nazis are battling for the hearts and minds of America’s working class – the forgotten men and women that President Trump speaks of so often.

The Left’s urban elite have absolutely no interest in pursuing or serving the interests of these Americans – they are all about identity politics and long ago decided to bank their political future on serving the interests of illegal aliens and expanding immigration from Third World populations already grounded in the anti-constitutional ideologies of Islam and Socialism.

Thus the battle is for the hearts and minds of mostly young white people who believe the Republican and Democratic parties have ignored their legitimate complaints that free trade as practiced by both political parties isn’t free at all, and that the econometric view of American jobs as just one market in a global market has pitted elite policy-makers against the best interests and quality of life of their fellow Americans.

Neo-Nazis, while presently mostly out of sight, are fighting for the allegiance of these working-class voters by blaming the loss of their upward mobility and quality of life on racial grievance, but their solution – government oppression of minorities – isn’t conservative at all.

However, it serves the political interest of Democrats to undermine President Trump and his conservative – populist agenda by pushing this guilt by association narrative and splitting the working men and women of America along racial and ethnic lines.

If African – Americans, especially in the Rust Belt – can be convinced that Trump and his white supporters are a bunch of racists then his policies of reducing regulations, raising wages by restricting immigration, rebuilding American manufacturing, renegotiating trade deals and protecting Second Amendment liberties must, through the magic of guilt by association, also be racist.

There’s nothing “Right” or conservative about the Neo-Nazis who gathered in Charlottesville, but lying about who they are and what President Trump said about them serves the interests of Democrat politicians, like Joe Biden, and so the Left and their fellow travelers in the media will continue to do so.

Robert E. Lee

Not only was Gen. Robert E. Lee a strong advocate for healing and uniting America after the war, but a lot of people don't know that he was also an abolitionist who absolutely detested slavery, and freed every slave that came into his possession by gift or inheritance. Gen Lee fought for the C.S.A. only out of loyalty to his own State of Virginia and to the South as a whole.

The Dem.'s twist everything president Trump said at that time and to this day! There may have been god people on both sides of the issue but having ANTIFA whom I consider a liberal terrorist group! They go to any conservative gathering and create trouble and blame it on the conservative's! Their a violent group and should be outlawed as a terrorist group and throw every one of them in jail! Just like black lives matter is just another name for the black panthers and Obama had them in the white house! They proclaimed war on police and told any white person that wanted to march with them had to go to the back! No white people in the front. Sounds and is racism! just like calling white people crackers etc. etc. etc. You may not like that our President doesn't talk like all the other elites in congress and that's what the most of Americans like. We put him in office to Drain the swamp and that's what he is doing little by little!
