Conservatives Split On Alabama’s GOP Senate Runoff

Trump Tweet Sessions
The hotly contested Alabama GOP Senate runoff between our old friend former Senator and Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Trump-endorsed retired Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville has the candidates producing dueling endorsements.

Club for Growth PAC yesterday announced its endorsement of Tommy Tuberville for the Alabama Senate Republican primary runoff according to Politico’s James Arkin who published an exclusive report on the announcement.

“Tommy Tuberville is a principled, free market conservative who has the support of President Trump and has put together a great campaign to defeat Doug Jones’ Senate.,” said David McIntosh, Club for Growth PAC President.

President Trump endorsed Tuberville in a March 10 Tweet. Club for Growth PAC polling ahead of the endorsement showed Tuberville had a four-point lead on Sessions. The poll also showed Tuberville’s lead could increase to 24 points with Trump’s public support.

The seat is currently occupied by Democrat Senator Doug Jones who defeated Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore in a December 2017 special election 49.9 percent to 48.4 percent. In 2016, Donald Trump easily beat Hillary in Alabama by 62.1 percent to 34.4 percent.

Club for Growth PACs support has been important to conservatives in key elections across the country. In 2018, conservative powerhouse won an impressive 85 percent races in the election while maintaining 8.9 percent overhead.

Meanwhile, Tuberville’s opponent, former Senator and Attorney General Jeff Sessions garnered the endorsement of several conservative organizations and interest groups.

The National Rifle Association’s National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) announced Friday that it is endorsing former Attorney General Jeff Sessions for the United States Senate in Alabama’s March 31st Republican primary runoff.

Jason Ouimet, Chairman of NRA-PVF, praised Sessions for his, “steadfast support of the Second Amendment.”

“Based on your strong leadership on Second Amendment issues as a U.S. Senator and U.S. Attorney General, you have earned the highest attainable rating, an A+ from NRA-PVF,” Ouimet said. “An A+ is reserved for a candidate with an excellent voting record on all critical NRA issues and who has made a vigorous effort to promote and defend the Second Amendment.”

Eagle Forum President Eunie Smith likewise issued this compelling endorsement of Senator Jeff Sessions, "For 20 years Eagle Forum actively worked with then Senator Jeff Sessions on issues affecting the family, such as pro-life, immigration, national defense, and religious liberty measures. In every case we watched Senator Sessions use his legal expertise and his legislative experience in agreement with Eagle Forum's positions. He was a leader for constitutionalist judges, against amnesty and for constructive immigration reform.”

Jeff Poor, in a post for reported the National Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Council announced its endorsement of Jeff Sessions in Alabama’s U.S. Senate race.

The National ICE Council represents approximately 7,600 officers, agents and employees who work for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) throughout the United States and its territories and possessions.

“On behalf of the men and women of the National Immigration and Customs Enforcement Council, we’re proud to endorse Jeff Sessions for Senate in the State of Alabama,” Chris Crane, president of the ICE Council, said in a statement. “We know Jeff Sessions and we know what he stands for. As the United States Attorney General, Jeff Sessions led the fight against sanctuary cities and illegal immigration, and was an unwavering champion of law enforcement officers across the nation. As a U.S. Senator, Jeff Sessions was the strongest supporter in the U.S. Congress of ICE, its mission, and its employees. We have no doubt that Senator Sessions will pick up right where he left off – standing up for law enforcement and the enforcement of our laws. We know he will continue to lead the fight against sanctuary cities that threaten our communities and endanger our law enforcement personnel across the country. And we know that he will keep fighting against radical open border policies that threaten our national security.”

“Jeff Sessions has always stood up to The Swamp and always worked to hold Washington accountable,” he added. “We need him now more than ever to stand up for what’s right and stand with President Trump to keep America safe.”

Conservative leader and former Senator Jim Demint endorsed Jeff Session, tweeting:  I am proud to support my friend @JeffSessions. No one is more supportive of @realDonaldTrump's #MAGA policies than Sessions. He's a champion for American working families, & will tirelessly fight to stop the left's push for amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants.

Senator Richard Shelby and 10 other Republican senators also released a letter endorsing Sessions’ run for the Republican nomination for the Senate seat currently held by Democrat Doug Jones: Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe, Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts, Wyoming Sen. Mike Enzi, Idaho Sen. Mike Crapo, Georgia Sen. Johnny Isakson, Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso, Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt, Arkansas Sen. John Boozman, Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson and Nebraska Sen. Deb Fischer all gave the former Attorney General their endorsement.
