The Establishment Media Misinterprets the Rise of Newt Gingrich

As former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich has risen in the polls, the establishment media has cast about for an explanation to the Lazarus-like resuscitation of a campaign that they in their collective wisdom had long-ago left for dead.

Naturally, digging into the cross-tabs of polls (or interviewing grassroots conservative leaders outside the Beltway) is too much work, so the media have concluded that Gingrich is rising because conservatives are against Romney for all kinds of non-policy reasons -- ranging from religious prejudice to class envy.

This is exactly the opposite of reality, but it fits well into the old establishment caricature that conservatives are “aginners” who are driven solely by opposition to change and have no positive agenda of their own.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney’s support has been stuck in the low to mid-twenties for the entire five years he has been running for President, not because he is a Mormon -- or the wealthy scion of an establishment family -- but because he has failed to convince conservatives he will govern as a conservative. It is really that simple.

Romney has had plenty of opportunities to close the deal with conservatives. Instead, rather than reach out to us, Romney has surrounded himself with recycled Bush advisors and Wall Street-types and propounded an economic plan that accepts the class warfare premises of Obama’s policies. He has danced, bobbed and weaved around all the hard foreign policy questions, and, most damagingly, has stubbornly attempted to defend a variety of flip-flops as “being consistent as human beings can be.”

No wonder conservatives look at Romney and see little prospect for conservative government if he is elected.

Gingrich, on the other hand, is well known to many conservative leaders who recognize that, despite his self-acknowledged errors and flaws, he is the one candidate who has a real record of implementing conservative government.

Balancing the budget, welfare reform and a host of other conservative initiatives that Gingrich championed as Speaker are not mere campaign rhetoric -- they actually happened.

What’s more, Gingrich looks to the conservative movement for advice, and does not avoid answering the hard questions (or put his finger to the wind looking for guidance from a focus group). He starts from the premise that a government acting from conservative principles would do, or not do, certain things and make certain value judgments about how to solve problems.

As the first caucuses and primaries loom in January, the conventional wisdom from the establishment media is that Romney’s vaunted fund raising ability and superior organization will win the day and he will wrap-up the 1,140 or so delegates needed to clinch the nomination by March.  Not only is this mathematically unlikely, but such an analysis ignores that fact that the 2010 congressional elections brought together a new coalition of conservative voters in this country.

To win in 2012, Republicans must hold together the traditional triad of economic, social and defense conservatives, and the newly energized constitutional conservatives of the Tea Party movement.  This four-part coalition will be unbeatable in the Republican primary elections and in the fall general election – if it coalesces behind a candidate.   To explain the rise of Newt Gingrich look no further than the fact that slowly, but surely, Newt is convincing voters in each segment of that coalition that he is the one candidate who will govern according to the conservative principles in which they are interested.

Character Matters

I disagree, again, with you, Richard.  I believe that most detractors of Mitt Romney ARE ignorant of his loyalty to the Constitution, his love of family, his freedom from scandal, his success in business and intelligence that would be invaluable in leadership to turn this country's economy around (as he did the International Olympics), AND to many are saddled with bigotry about his religion, a subject that should not even be relevant to this candidacy!

By Jon E. Yang Washigton Post, Jan 22 1997 Page Ao1-The House voted overwhelmingly yesterday to reprimand House Speaker Newt Gingric (R-Ga) and order him pay an unprecedented $300,000 penalty, the first time in the House's 208 year history it has disciplined a speaker for ethical wrongdoing. The ethics case and its resolution leave Ginrich with little leeway for future personal controversies, House Rebublicans said. Exactly one month before yesterday's vote, Gingrich admitted that he brought discredit to the House and broke its rules by failing to ensure that financing for two projects would not violate federal tax law and by giving the House ethics committee false information.

Gingrich & the US Constitution

Take a look at this video ... PLEASE

It really is time to wake up.

State Run Media

The "Real Enemy" has it exactly right. All I want to add to the conversation is that like the last presidential election, when the state-run media - that is what it has become - handpicked the GOP'S nominee "McShame", they are doing the same thing with "Neutered Gingrich". They want to assure that the current dictator and his communist regime will have another four years at the public coffer while intentionally destroying capitalism and America. The only candidate that is genuine and has America's best interest at heart is M.[ Bachan]. She has more resolve and courage than her male counterparts; unfortunately, I do not think she is electable. That leaves the GOP with a group of sad sacks that will insure another four years of destruction that this country will not endure.

The only way of defeating the current Muslim-Marxist and his communist regime is to make it known to the sheeple of this country that, indeed, this is who these reprobates are. It's very simple. The Republican's mantra should be: You can reelect "Obummer" and continue down the path,no, make that highway of communism OR you can elect a Republican and return the country to capitalism and what made this the greatest nation in the world before the capitalistic system was sabotaged by the communists noiw in POWER. Prediction: if the "Obummer" is not impeached - as he should - he will be America's last elected president, strike that - DICTATOR!

Newt is NOT a Conservative!!!

I couldn't say it better than former CA legislator, well-known Conservative, and researcher Steve Baldwin:

Though he relentlessly pushes

Though he relentlessly pushes military spending and talks like a bigtime hawk, Gingrich avoided the Vietnam War through a combination of student and family deferments. (He married one of his teachers at age 19.Let me translate that for you .It is O.K for America's children to die throughout many decades, but he will be allright, and well paid, and have sex.Lots of sex,Hell,Southwire's paying for it all!He has also stated in a recent debate that he will just let all the illegal immigrants be, because they have ties here.Awww, how thoughtful. So he agrees that we are at war,but thinks it is fine and dandy to let anyone just enter our country at will?Conservative my ass,he is the enemy.

The Real Enemy

We need to remember who the REAL ENEMY is:  Barack Obama, his henchman Axelrod, the Democrat Party,; George Soros; labor unions; ACLU, ACORN, Communist Party USA, the so-called mainstream news media (ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, PBS, NPR, et al including the New York Times and Waashington Post); for the Most Part, the Entertainment  Industry and the corps of leftists who control it; and then last, but not least, those who vote for or support the above.  They are the problem; they are the enemy; they are the ones we need to fear most.  I sincerely believe these elements want to establish a oligarchic dictatorship in which only one political party will prevail and the so-called leader of the nation would be chosen by a "council" of sorts who would be the mouthpiece for the elitists who would control the government.  The middle class would be virtually abolished; the upper class would consist entirely of elitists such as Soros; and the vast lower class would be US.  I have no problem with those who support Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich, Herman Cain, Michelle Bachmann, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, and the others.  I too have my preferences!  However, at this point in time the Democrat perverts such as Axelrod are smiling at what is happening and when such enemies as Axelrod smiles, then we are in trouble!

I am not denying the first part of your rant untill you get to the Republican choices. That is what this discussion is about.I am glad you brought out Axlerod though.I think that the Republican party has been infiltrated soon after 1850 or before. If you want proof just study political history. There has not been a difference in the two parties in 150+ years. The individual candidates are the key.

Romney ... Gingrich

Romney is about as "conservative" as my communist beagle.  He's a bored con artist.  Opposition has nothing to do with religion.

Gingrich ... likewise, is a phony BS artist, corrupt slimeball ... but, he is more likely not to be totally deceitful.  Newt is intelligent and is somewhat predictable.  I dislike the foreign policies of Romney and Gingrich ... prefer the non-interventionist approach of the libertarians.

Then Vote That Way... is time to stop voting for the lesser of two evils. Time to vote based on principles rather than partisan gamesmanship.

Gengrich represents conservatives?!?

I think you're missing the *real* conservative on the ticket, Ron Paul.  That's why he easily won the Values Voters straw poll, among many others.  Ron Paul has not only *talked* about being conservative for years, but he has VOTED conservative for over 30 years.  Not to mention that you can trust the guy - Ron Paul has had zero ethics violations in 30+ years of government service, versus someone like Gengrich who had more than 80 in the 6 short years he was in government.  Who do you trust?  There's a reason Ron Paul is in first in Iowa and 2nd in New Hampshire...

The Media is Right & You're wrong... just this once

Richard - I typically always agree with you.. but this once I think you're wrong and here's why:

Newt Gingrich is the LEAST conservative person in the race - if conservative values are family, constitution, and integrity. Newt has left at least one wife for someone he had a multi-year affair with and been responsible for the destruction of at least two families (his first and his second wife). Newt has abandoned constitutional principles EVERY time it has been convenient or profitable for him; Newt has shown time and again that his priority #1 is financial gain.

I'm sorry but Newt Gingrich is the anti-thesis of Conservative - a Wolf in Wool Britches as it were. So the only conclusion can be that Newt Gingrich is nothing more than another Anti-Romney.

That is assuming, of course, that conservative voters are still willing to educate themselves and not just accept a politician at his word.

Gingrich is definitely NOT A CONSERVATIVE!

Cain and

Cain and Bachmann???Bwaaahaahaaha.Cain thinks Africa is a country and we need to stop China from getting nukes.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   "Carbon dioxide is portrayed as harmful. But there isn't even one study that can be produced that shows that carbon dioxide is a harmful gas." -Rep. Michelle Bachmann, April, 2009.Oh,those wonder twins never cease to amaze me.Now your funny too.

Conservative Herman Cain..?

Herman Cain the lobbyist?

Herman Cain who believes government shouldn't be made smaller but should be 'fixed'?

Herman Cain who was a member of the Board of Executives of a Branch of the Federal Reserve from 92-94 and the Chief from 95-96?

Herman Cain who refuses to stand up definitively against abortion?

Herman Cain who knows so little about the Constitution that he quoted the Declaration of Independence AS IF IT WERE the Constitution?

No.. I think not; the jury's still out on Michele Bachmann - but I think I'd rather trust a man who's been in the snake pit for 30 years and been able to remain honest & sincere and fought solely for the constitution while returning almost $140,000 per year from his congressional office, denying himself the lucrative congressional pension plan and never taking lobbyist special interest money - the ONLY candidate willing to cut the presidential pay from $400k to $40k on top of REAL budget cuts and fixes.

Ron Paul is the only true conservative and no matter what happens he has my vote in 2012 - because a vote for anyone else is a vote for more of the same.

Cain and Bachmann?

I think that train alreaduy left the station .... HMMmmmmmm....
