Acclaimed conservative thinker and Reagan biographer Craig Shirley today blasted Mitt Romney for wanting to wipe Reaganism away from the Republican Party.
Shirley, who has been a part of the American conservative movement for nearly 40 years, is the author of two critically praised bestselling books on U.S. President Ronald Reagan; Rendezvous with Destiny: Ronald Reagan and the Campaign that Changed America and Reagan's Revolution: The Untold Story of the Campaign That Started It All.
“The Etch a Sketch comments from Romney are revealing and terrifying. Romneyism---like Bushism and McCainism---is about wiping Reaganism away from the Republican Party,” wrote Shirley in comments emailed to influential conservatives around the country.
Shirley went on to point out that, “Romney has made it clear in the past his abhorrence of Ronald Reagan. Romney is about personal power, plain and simple.”
“The Establishment Republicans always hated Reagan, conservatism and Governor Romney tipped his hand today, with his campaign’s alarming observations.”
“If Romney becomes the nominee of the Republican Party, conservatives will seriously consider walking away and looking at the candidacy of Gary Johnson.”
Shirley concluded his email comments by observing that, “If Romney is the nominee of the Republican Party, he could be the most despised choice since Richard Nixon.”
