Santorum’s National Leadership Needed by Conservatives

The grassroots conservative activists who powered Rick Santorum’s campaign of course respect his decision to suspend his campaign.

Conservatives are deeply in Rick’s debt for making their issues the theme of his campaign. That Rick Santorum came from the back of the pack with virtually no resources to threaten the establishment candidate speaks volumes about the power of conservative ideas to win elections.

Conservatives have been looking for a leader ever since Ronald Reagan left the public stage. Rick has been one of the few public figures to regularly unite all four legs of the winning 2010 conservative coalition: social conservatives, national defense conservatives, economic conservatives, and the small government constitutional conservatives of the Tea Party.

Party leaders must recognize that many movement conservatives believe they were denied a voice in the selection of the Republican presidential nominee because party insiders had their thumb on the scale. From ignoring their own party rules on delegate allocation, to jumping the gun on setting up joint campaign and fundraising efforts with Mitt Romney, it appears to many grassroots movement conservatives the fix for Romney was in.

Today, Rick Santorum is the only conservative who can provide the national leadership necessary to bring these conservative voters back to the fold and, most importantly, to demonstrate that conservatives are not merely some interest group to be placated--conservatives ARE the Republican Party.

Without the united and enthusiastic support of most all conservatives, Republican candidates, from President to the local level, will have an exceedingly difficult challenge winning in November.

Santorum Exit Confirms Republican Party is not Conservative

The Conservative Party USA extends its heartfelt thanks to Senator Rick Santorum for giving true conservatives some hope during the GOP primaries. Despite a shoe-string budget, media coverage that either ignored him or attacked him (in that order) and the complete lack of GOP establishment support, Santorum punched far above his weight class during the past six months.  He won 10 contests and inspired the conservative base more than anyone since Ronald Reagan.

While Richard Viguerie won't admit it, this clear, unambiguous fact remains: The majority of Republicans voted for Mitt Romney during the Primaries.  Romney won 57% of all the delegates awarded so far and there was real concern that Santorum could have actually lost his home state of Pennsylvania.

Don’t be fooled by the vacuous argument that Gingrich split the conservative vote because he was effectively out of the picture since the Georgia primary in March. It was a basically a two-man contest in big states like MI, OH and WI. Bottom Line: Republicans gave Romney more delegates than Santorum, Gingrich and Paul combined.

It’s also a well-known that Republicans who vote in primaries are generally more “conservative” than the rest of the GOP faithful who vote in the general election.  Since the primaries are over, the Republican Party will soon relegate conservatives to the back room just like they have every four years. You can be sure of that!

All these salient facts should also make it clear that the Republican Party is related to true conservatism like a camel is related to beach volley ball.

Sadly, too many people in the Tea Party started migrating to Romney in WI, OH, MD primaries.  In addition, no local or national Tea Party organization officially endorsed Santorum.  The Conservative Party USA, however, was the first national party to endorse Rick in December when he was running at just 3% in the Iowa polls.  Of course the rest is history.

The Conservative Party USA is the next evolutionary step of the Tea Party because it combines fiscal restraint with traditional American values that are outlined in a clear Platform and is managed by a strong leadership team that has a unified, long-term vision for America.

Anyone but Romney, the Conservative Party

Hoping for a Brokered Convention and the chance for someone else to be nominated instead of Romney.

RINO

just anotrher RINO like Bush

Not really...

Santorum decidedly does not bring together the members of the conservative coalition.  The 3 keystone issues of the Tea Party protests were government spending and debt, bailouts, and entitlements.  While in office, Santorum repeatedly voted for the expanding Bush budgets and increasing debt ceilings, openly braggnig of the pork barrel largesse he brought home to Pennsylvania.  On bailouts, sure he claimed not to support TARP, but his "team player" voting record in the Senate -- and his support for bailouts of home state steel companies and the airline industry -- suggest that he would've voted for the financial sector bailouts.  For entitlements, all you have to do is look at the single largest entitlement expanion since LBJ:  Medicare Part D.

At to that the fact that Santorum has open contempt for the liberty-minded members of the GOP and Tea Parties, and then his repeated attempts to pull the focus away from the economy and jobs to sideshow issues like birth control, and you don't find a leader at all, much less one who can bring other people "back to the fold".

"Not Really?"

Not Really?  First I don't know but I feel a "Ron Paul" moment coming on....Just like the MSM, you are telling half truths with distortions, just like Ron paul claiming, expounding, that he never voted for pork, no he never did, he just put programs up there, saw that they would get enough votes without his vote, and then sat back and as quick as you can say "9-11 was an inside job" presto-chango Ronny gets a win-win.....brings back pork to his constituents and keeps his perfect record of never passing one piece of legislation.....what? Well I could say Paul has NEVER,not once voted for PORK.  He is a self-sacrificing truth telling sage of our Times, who is the only man who is not willing to sacrifice his values to win politically.....but then again, words and how you "spin" something, what you focus on, what you "leave" out is the PROBLEM with not only the MSM but now "commenters" who by the above comment say this to me: I don't like Santorum, in fact I kinda loathe him....I'm either a paulbot, or a paid Romeny-ite or I'm a woman, playing a man who is playing a transgender who hates all things that try to stand by their Religious/Moral doctrines, esp when it comes to sex, pro-life and yes, even catholic teaching on Birth Control (which btw, Not Really, Santorum didn't manufacture the Obama assault of the Catholic Church, or Obama's dictate that the Church pay for Birth Control, and Not Really, although I'm no political expert, I'd say the last thing Santorum wanted to run around and highlight was the Church's stance on Birth Control, but God Bless him, he didn't squirm and mealy mouth his way around the issue when asked)  SO, Not Really, if you are a Tea Party member, I might remind you as one who started a Tea Party, the biggest problem with some Tea Party members is their loss of focus....its one thing to be non waivering on the Tea Party main core focus, its another to apply those to real life flesh and blood human beings.....by those standards we'd have no Tea Party Candidates, no one lives in a vacuum, we'd need a a good 'bot that we could program, but here I digress back to the whole paulbot issue.....my bio

Ok....

I'd be interested in where, specifically, I used either a "half truth" or a distortion above. You can get plenty of negatives about Santorum from his own campaign literature, where he bragged about milk price supports, raising the minimum wage, and pork barrel payouts for Pennsylvania.

For the record, I've not supported Paul -- I'm not a big fan of conspiracy-minded, non-legislating legislators -- but even if I did, that wouldn't change the substance of my claims. Attacking the messenger is certainly a diversion.

Regarding the health insurance mandates established by Obamacare, the issue isn't just about religious liberty, it's about individual liberty. One doesn't have to have a moral or religious concern to be legitimately worried about -- and desire to be set free from -- not just the birth control mandates but ALL the mandates.

Santorum allowed himself to be sidetracked from the real issues and on to issues that voters themselves were not clamoring to hear about.

I can't think of a single great President who came from the Senate. I see nothing in Santorum's record, performance, or temperament to suggest he would go against the tide, and I've seen nothing from him to suggest that he's a strong leader who can pull together different parts of the conservative coalition.

Santorum Acted Like Romney

Romney has had many election year conversions.  Santorum had one, too.  He did not demonstrate, as Senator, the need to reduce government.  He voted to expand government.  Admittedly, he said "I took one for the team."  He was not whom I would call a demonstrated smaller goverment conservative, but he was the best that threw his hat into the ring.  No matter the calls for getting behind Romney, unless unemployment, and/or gas prices go northward, Mr. Romney will not be our next President.  I would say that it's now that we should be looking for the 2016 candidate to get behind.  Rick Santorum should not be that candidate.

While I presonally like them

While I presonally like them both, and have supported the only "demonstrated" conservative in my view (Newt of the 90's), I believe one of the two we're actually in the race to ensure Romney was the nominee.  Divide the conservative vote and conquer...I don't put anything past the Washington entrenched elites and pundits at this point. 60% of Republicans want someone other then Romney at the top of the ticket....and now it's virtually called....before I've had my chance to vote no less.

All this, and our country sinks deeper and deeper into the abyss.

Where does it end?

Seriously?

Anyone watching Santorum and Gingrich with their hubris and their obvious enmity towards Romney could not seriously suggest that one or either was some sort of plant by the "establishment" to ensure a Romney victory. Romney is going to win because voters decided he's the most qualified from a group of very flawed candidates. It is the recognition of that flawed nature that has people still wishing they had other choices.

Disagree

Wonderful. Let's annoint Rick Santorum. Nope.

Yes, he pushed certain issues, but with all due respect Rick Santorum is not the new conservative leader.

Yes, he will have a role to play within the conservative movement and the Republican party, but he is not the person you are making him out to be.

Conservatives Must Unite

Now that Rick is out of the race, the only true conservative left is Ron Paul.

If you are a Rick Santorum supporter, the most logical choice left is Dr. Paul. Please consider the options and throw your support behind Ron Paul, the only true true conservative and Champion of the Constitution left in the race. Romney and Gingrich are not acceptable alternatives. Romney and the media have been ignoring Dr. Paul and trying to marginalize his millions of ardent supporters. Together with the Santorum supporters our numbers would be undeniable. Ron Paul is the only GOP candidate that can defeat Obama in November. He will bring together the social conservatives, economic conservatives, the small government constitutional conservatives of the Tea Party, Independents, Libratarians and disillusioned and disfranchised Democrats.

Moron Paul

He is a WACKJOB and should CRAWL back into the desert hole that he came from with the rest of you Illiterate morons.

Paul Patriot

Too much time fishing and not enough time reading?

Illiterates may take to name calling while real patriots talk about real issues, such as the ongoing erosion of our personal freedom. Who is bringing attention to NDAA, CISPA, and other constitutional abductions - Ron Paul! Who is the only candidate with the fortitude and honesty to talk about the erosion of our economy by the Federal Reserve, while the special interests continue to be bailed out at the expense the tax payer - Ron Paul.

Ron Paul is the only real conservative in this race, and the only one getting my vote!

Conservative Working Mom

Hi. This is one voter who promises to take another look at Dr. Ron Paul. The idea of voting for Romney by default does not sit well with me. Kudos to Congressman Paul for remaining in the race. My Primary has not yet occurred (Colorado, which went to Santorum at our caucus), contrary to what this article says, and I don't concede that Romney is a shoe-in nominee. At least I sincerely hope not.
