Thinking clearly about Trump and aid to Ukraine

Byron York, Washington Examiner

There's been a lot of confusion about what, exactly, President Trump's concerns were before withholding and later approving U.S. military aid to Ukraine. Mick Mulvaney, the acting White House chief of staff, made a hash of things during his much-discussed press conference. The story is more complicated than some press coverage suggests. Four of Trump's reasons for withholding aid were legitimate. The fifth was not. But the fact remains that the president had acceptable reasons to temporarily hold back aid. There's more to the story than just Trump's fifth reason. And on that, perhaps the president should just take Rich Lowry's advice and move on.

Cut Off Aid to Central America to Save It

Roger L. Simon, PJ Media

The best immediate action we can take for Central America is to end all illegal immigration permanently with the full force of the law, constructing the border wall for emphasis. Open borders, ironically, hurt Honduras, El Salvador, etc. even more than they hurt us. They simply perpetuate a failed system. Power-hungry Democrats will not face this.  But perhaps the ugly spectacle of this caravan will awaken the American people. If anything should get them to vote Republican, this should be it. Of course, after the vote, the real pressure has to go on those same Republicans whose unwillingness to act is legendary.

Stop Throwing Away Foreign Aid Dollars for Nothing

It long has been evident that nations are poor because of bad policies, not inadequate cash balances.  Which makes economic reform, not foreign aid, the key to growth.  Unfortunately, politicians continue to take money from poor people in rich countries and give it to rich people in poor countries in the name of development.

America Should Stay Out of Egyptian Bloodbath

As Senator Rand Paul noted in an op-ed for CNN, by “constantly intervening in these troubled parts of the world is that there are often no clear good guys or bad guys. Today's ally can quickly become tomorrow's enemy." McCain, Graham and Obama should keep America out of Egypt and let Egyptians decide where their future lies.

Washington Foolishly Tilts Towards War in Syria

In the first in a series of columns on national security and foreign policy, Doug Bandow, Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute, says that at the very moment Washington should be pursuing a policy of peace, policymakers are preparing to join a civil war in which America’s security is not involved, other nations have much more at stake, many of the “good” guys in fact are bad, and there would be no easy exit.
