They Take the Second Amendment First and the First Amendment Second

Kurt Schlicter, Townhall

Liberals love the idea of shutting up the opposition. Today, it’s through intimidation. Tomorrow, it’ll be through the government. It all starts with guns. Once your Second Amendment rights are gone, do you think the liberals will suddenly decide to be more respectful of your First Amendment rights? Or do you think they will accelerate their campaign to strip you of the civil rights that remain the last obstacle to their total control?

Could #MarchForOurLives be a setback for gun control?

Michael Graham, CBS News

Saturday's rally, with its acid rhetoric and progressive overreach, may have been the Left's first setback of the year. "They have gotten the other side revved up," says Jim Wallace of the Gun Owners Action League, a pro-gun-rights group in Massachusetts. "The NRA's membership is increasing, ours is increasing. We're seeing it first hand: people who would not normally get involved are very concerned about their civil rights."

In Defense of 'Gunsplaining'

David French, National Review

Americans don’t give away their freedoms willingly. And they’re especially unwilling to limit their liberties in response to arguments based in ignorance, sprinkled with condescension and moral superiority. So law-abiding gun-owners respond by “gunsplaining,” and they find that when they gunsplain, they tend to win. Ignorance is a plague, and the gun-rights community is eager to provide the cure.

Trump, DOJ taking steps to make Americans safer after school shootings

Jeff Sessions, Fox News

We have a law-and-order president who is determined to make America safer. President Trump and his administration are moving swiftly and taking action. With these new measures in place, we are better positioned to disarm criminals and protect the law-abiding people of this country. Achieving those two goals will help us achieve President Trump’s goal of a safer America.

The Oligarchs’ Counterrevolution

Media and internet near-monopolies and a too big to fail bank, the largest credit card issuer in the country, have joined in another attack on the Second Amendment and brazenly announced their plan to undermine the Constitution to accomplish their goals.

In defense of the right to keep and bear arms

Andrew P. Napolitano, Washington Times

Even after Heller, governments have found ways to infringe on the right to self-defense. Government does not like competition. Essentially, government is the entity among us that monopolizes force. The more force it monopolizes the more power it has. So it has enacted, in the name of safety, the least safe places on earth — gun-free zones. The nightclub in Orlando, the government offices in San Bernardino, the schools in Columbine, Newtown and Parkland were all killing zones because the government prohibited guns there and the killers knew this.

Counterattack Hard Against Liberal Attacks on Our Gun Rights and Other Civil Liberties

Kurt Schlichter, Townhall

The difference between government censorship and corporate censorship is no difference at all. Again, the federal government and the states have the power to regulate. Once again, we must ban discrimination on the basis of advocacy for or exercise of constitutional rights, and empower individual plaintiffs to seek penalties and attorneys’ fees for violations. If these companies really believe what they're doing is right, they can hire lawyers in 30 states.

The debate we need on school shootings

Editors, Washington Examiner

We disagree with politicians who reacted to the horrific school shooting in Florida by pleading “now is not the time” for a debate on gun laws. A debate on gun control and all policies that could help prevent such a traumatizing event from happening again is welcome. But it needs to be a real debate, and such a thing has been hard to come by. There are clashing values and competing rights contending here, so any debate will unavoidably include anger.

Protect Kids or Confiscate Guns?

Patrick J. Buchanan, Buchanan.org

Our embassies are defended by Marines with M16s. Security guards with guns defend banks and military bases, presidents and politicians. The best way to protect kids in schools may be to protect schools, and run down and incarcerate the known criminals and crazies who are the primary threats.

'We Have to Do Something'

Ben Shapiro, CNS News

The biggest problem with the gun control debate has been its failure to boil down slogans to proposals. That problem won't be alleviated so long as the media insist on putting mourning teenagers on television with the chyron "DO SOMETHING." Something is nothing unless someone puts some actual proposals on the table.

Second Amendment Update: National Concealed Carry Reciprocity Vote Today

It is crucial for those who value their Second Amendment guaranteed rights to get on the telephone to call their Representative to urge him or her to support H.R. 38, The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017. The Capitol Switchboard is 1-866-220-0044 we urge all CHQ readers to call their Representative TODAY in support of H.R. 38.

First They Will Take Your Dogs, Then They Will Take Your Guns

Messing with an American's dogs and guns is a fast way to start a revolution, but that's just what may be in the offing if a ruling by a U.S. District Judge in Michigan becomes precedent.

Weak-Kneed Ryan Stalls National Concealed Carry Reciprocity

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan isn't "weak-kneed" on national reciprocity or rolling back Obama-era gun control and other anti-constitutional legislation, he's on the other side.

Is the Second Amendment Only for the Elite?

The Framers of the Constitution did not reserve the right of self-defense to those elite members of society whose position or wealth provides them with armed guards. When the courts fail to enforce the promises of the Constitution, then it is up to the legislature to act. We urge Congress to take up and pass a national concealed carry bill.

Conservatives take a leap of faith on Gorsuch

Ryan Lovelace, Washington Examiner

Gorsuch looks poised to follow in the footsteps of the late Justice Antonin Scalia, a stalwart originalist whose vacant seat Gorsuch is looking to fill. But the potential for the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals judge to differ from Scalia on the Second Amendment and abortion has some conservatives acknowledging they are not sure where the high court nominee stands on those issues.

Urban Leftists Can’t Stop Violating the Constitution

David French, National Review

It’s time to impose real costs for violations of our most fundamental constitutional rights. The most important task of government at any level in the United States is to protect the liberty of its citizens. A government or public entity that repeatedly violates the rights secured in the Bill of Rights simply doesn’t deserve taxpayer support, and it’s past time to link federal funding to the protection of individual liberty.

We Need More Legislators Like Florida State Representative Bob Rommel

I was blown away when, in less than 24 hours, I received a reply to my email to Rep. Bob Rommel about using constitutional state sovereignty to protect the Second Amendment saying "I, too, am totally alarmed by the federal government’s troublesome overreach into our lives, and most especially by attempts to curtail our God-given right to protect ourselves and our families."

No, President Obama, It’s Not Easier To Buy A Glock Than A Book

Sean Davis, The Federalist

The president’s claim that teenagers can go out and grab Glocks more easily than they can find books or computers isn’t just false. It’s a pathetic attempt by an ineffective, lame duck president to hijack a service of mourning for his own unpopular political agenda.

Ryan And McCarthy Playing Small Ball Against Islam’s Civilization Jihad

The Capitol Switchboard is 1-866-220-0044 we urge CHQ readers to call Speaker Ryan, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Homeland Security Chairman Mike McCaul to tell them it is time to confront the subversive pre-violent elements of civilization jihad, such as influence operations, lawfare, infiltration, migration, material support for terrorism, etc. Tell them that there is no acceptable substitute for Victory Over Jihad and that their bill falls far short of putting in place the tools necessary to defeat the clear and present danger civilization jihad presents to constitutional liberty and Western civilization.
