Politicians often speak of the need to balance economic growth and environmental protection. But energy projects should not be viewed in this manner where a trade-off needs to take place between the two. Sensible, free-market policies that protect private property rights and respect the rule of law will create jobs while protecting the economy. The approval of Keystone XL and Dakota Access demonstrate that.
Conservatives must draw a bright red line now. The top issue going forward through the rest of this month and into Jan. is not Keystone or the medical device tax, as McConnell has suggested; it is stopping Obama’s amnesty.
When Kevin McCarthy and Chris Christie talk about “compromise” what they are really talking about is growing government at a slightly slower pace than it would grow if Obama had a Democratic majority on Capitol Hill. That is not what handed Republicans back the majority.
