President Obama’s closing speech at his bizarrely confused and irresolute Countering “Violent Extremism” Summit was predictable in its now-pathetic formula to avoid the obvious truth – that Islamist ideology is behind the current attacks Muslims are perpetrating in a campaign to impose Sharia on the entire world.
In Obama’s formula – which builds upon the false narrative first propounded by George W. Bush that Islam is a “religion of peace” – it is now “perverted Islam” that is behind the war that he is losing.
While some may think that Obama, by finally at least using the word “Islam” in association with this war, has taken a step toward recognizing the reality of what’s going on, we see his remarks as a dangerous series of lies not only about what he is doing, but about the nature of Islam and the Islamic ideology of Sharia.
But first, let’s dispense with what is perhaps the most obvious lie in Obama’s remarks. The President said, “…we have marshalled the full force of the United States government, and we’re working with allies and partners to dismantle terrorist organizations and protect the American people. “
This is patently false. Obama’s recently proposed Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) makes clear Obama seeks authorization for a very limited set of military actions. Moreover, other government programs that should be used in a war that involves “the full force of the United States government,” such as Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty are being cut by Obama, not ramped-up as they were in Ronald Reagan’s successful war to defeat world communism.
However, in Obama’s remarks was the most dangerous lie that he is trying to sell to the American people: “They [the leaders of ISIS, al Qaeda, etc.] are not religious leaders -- they’re terrorists. And we are not at war with Islam. We are at war with people who have perverted Islam.”
Contrary to what President Obama said, the most violent terrorists in today’s world are Islamic. Moreover, as Breitbart’s John Sexton documented last October, while the actively fighting jihadists make up a tiny percentage of Muslims worldwide; a significant percentage of Muslims around the world, numbering well over 100 million, believe practices like mutilation, stoning and the death penalty are appropriate for non-violent offenses, such as leaving the Muslim faith.
Pew did do a worldwide poll of Muslims which included their attitudes toward Sharia law. What the poll found was that 74% of Egyptian Muslims favored making Sharia the law of the land and, among those, 86% believed the death penalty was appropriate in cases of apostasy. If you multiply it out calculated Sexton, you get 64.5% of Egyptians who believe in killing apostates.
Another question Pew asked was about support for stoning women caught in adultery. The response to that question was similar or higher in some cases to the apostasy question notes Sexton. In Indonesia (the most populous Muslim nation) support was 48% of the 72% who support Sharia. That works out to 34.5% of the population as a whole or about 70 million Muslims.
Sexton also noted that Muslims who support Sharia were asked if they also support the corporal punishment Sharia entails, i.e. whipping and amputating the hands of thieves. In Egypt support was at 70%, in Bangladesh at 50% and in Indonesia at 45 percent. Those are not majorities but they are large pluralities equal to tens of millions of people in these countries.
Obama, in another lie said, “Al Qaeda and ISIL do draw, selectively, from the Islamic texts. They do depend upon the misperception around the world that they speak in some fashion for people of the Muslim faith, that Islam is somehow inherently violent, that there is some sort of clash of civilizations.”
Our take on that remark is that it was an attempt to knockdown the growing Western recognition that Islam is at odds with our understanding of the equality of women.
The New York Post, in a Bruce Golding article “Female ISIS captives endure ‘brutal and abnormal’ sex” published on the very day Obama delivered his remarks (February 18, 2015) documented how the supposedly ultra-conservative Muslim fundamentalists have been forcing women in the city of Raqqa to marry them and engage in savage sex acts that result in hospital treatment.
Golding reported that two British human rights groups on the very day of Obama’s speech said ISIS kidnapped at least 3,000 women and girls last year from the areas it controls in Iraq.
Some victims were forced to marry ISIS terrorists, while others were sold into sexual slavery, according to a report by Minority Rights Group International and the Ceasefire Centre for Civilian Rights.
The report said firsthand accounts from victims who spoke secretly by phone in August revealed that ISIS fighters were raping women on a daily basis, with some victims begging the activists to arrange airstrikes on their locations and end their suffering.
Golding reported that one kidnapped girl who belongs to the minority Yazidi religious group said she was among 350 girls transported to Syria and offered for sale “as if in a chicken market.”
Is this barbarity unique to a “selective” interpretation of Muslim religious texts? Not at all.
The Quran in Sura 4:24 says slave women are sexual property for their male owners: “And forbidden to you are wedded wives of other people except those who have fallen in your hands [as prisoners of war].” (Maududi, vol. 1, p. 319). See also Suras 4:3; 23:5—6; 33:50; 70:22—30, all of which permit male slave owners to have sex with their female slaves. Suras 23:5—6 and 70:22—230 also allow men to have sex with their slaves.*
The lie in Obama’s narrative about the global jihad movement’s alleged “selective” use of religious texts to justify its actions is that sexual slavery and everything that goes with it are not inventions of ISIS, or “violent extremists,” they are right there in the Quran – and in graphic terms that cannot be misunderstood or taken out of context.
We are in a war of ideas, not just with radical Islamists, but with concepts deeply embedded in Muslim culture and religious texts. If our own President won’t be honest about how those concepts differ from our own and stand up and defend the ideas and values enshrined in our Constitution, such as the equality of women, we are well on our way to losing that war.
