Suing the Obama Administration is No Substitute for Moral Leadership

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, head of the archdiocese of New York, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, head of the archdiocese of Washington, D.C., the University of Notre Dame, and 40 other Catholic dioceses and organizations have announced that they are suing the Obama administration for violating their First Amendment right to freedom of religion.

According to CNS News, the dioceses and organizations, in different combinations, are filing 12 different lawsuits in federal courts around the country.*

Cardinal Timothy DolanThis may be a necessary step to undo the unprecedented unconstitutional intrusion into freedom of conscience caused by the regulation that Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced last August, and finalized in January, that requires virtually all health care plans in the United States to cover sterilizations and all Food and Drug Administration-approved contraceptives, including those that can cause abortions.

But is suing the Obama administration all that is necessary?

To back-up the lawsuits, what is really needed to undo the damage and make sure that it never happens again is the moral leadership that the clergy and Church hierarchy offer in their day-to-day ministries and Sunday morning sermons. However, the Church leaders have yet to bring that powerful force to bear against the Obama administration’s unconstitutional actions.

Church leaders must identify, and publicly oppose the source of their persecution, not leave the job of making the case for the rightness of their cause to their law firm.

For some church leaders, exercising such leadership won’t be easy. Those who long ago bought into the idea of the goodness of the welfare state may have a hard time accepting the fact that the oppression they are now suffering is merely the welfare state carried to its logical conclusion by President Obama.

Cardinal Dolan, who is also president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said in a statement, “We have tried negotiation with the administration and legislation with the Congress – and we’ll keep at it – but there's still no fix."

Cardinal Dolan stands out as one religious leader who has recognized the danger in the Obama administration’s health care mandate from the beginning and spoken against it, but he should recognize that there can be no negotiating with those in the Obama administration who are bent on coercing their fellow citizens into the liberal utopia Obama has promised.

Suing may be necessary to protect the Church’s assets, but it is not, by itself, leadership. In modern America, when faced with other great challenges to its teachings, the Church and its leaders showed their leadership through personal example and action.

That means preaching, being at the forefront of vigorous public campaigns in favor of the right-to-life, and through organizing the faithful to demonstrate their opposition to immoral government policies -- as church leaders did in support of civil rights legislation when they declared segregation a moral wrong. The campaign to end the Obama administration’s unconstitutional invasion of freedom of conscience deserves that same kind of leadership.

Those church leaders who once thought Obama’s promise of change wouldn’t affect them must get on the side of Constitutional government now. If they put their moral authority and leadership publicly out front, they will show Americans that they understand that the loss of freedom of conscience threatens all of our other freedoms, and they will find millions of Americans – believers and non-believers alike – on their side.

* The Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. has established a website, preservereligiousfreedom.org to explain the lawsuit against the Obama administration, publicize its positions and inform interested parties of the latest developments in the case.

Hot Button Issue.

Once again Ron Paul is right.I had to read the comments on this one.Barry's only job is to lead the military, veto things and be a wise cheerleader for the nation(with some other very important duties).Signing things into law that are unconstitutional would be breaking the oath that he took. The nation is supposed to be run by the States, not the other way around. It is not in the Constitution, but the first amendment clarifies the idea, which was in an earlier letter penned by Thomas Jefferson.I am not an expert, and you can call me a belated Nostrildamus, but what we need is more Constitutional lawyers bringing these things to light. How is Ron right, you might ask?He would veto that thing before it was written. Are you suggesting that the Cardinal pray for the Socialist agenda to go away?If we have a bunch of commie pinkos in the house,I would start by naming names on a list and passing them out to all the churches, not just yours. The names on the list would have every one of those creeps that signed this thing. Why stop at churches?Personally I would make a spectacle of it,you know, show up on Jerry Springer, invite the Moonies,Gay activists,White Supremacists, random Carnies, and the Black Panthers, all together for tea with the Pope.I think Jerry would make it a four hour special.Seriously,I can not stand Mitt Romney, but if I thought that his rights were being misrepresented by any group,I would defend him,and then throw my shoe at him later. That is the golden rule and this precarious nation is supposed to be held together by laws.

Hey Viguerie, you ain't

Hey Viguerie, you ain't telling the truth when referring to "... the liberal utopia Obama has promised..."; what he has vowed to do when promising that, once "occupying" the White House, hed  would be fully engaged in "...fundamentally transforming the United States of America..." into a socialist basket-case and a heinous tyranny, as a steppingstone to worse things.

To point to be made here is that you, conservative pundits, give cover to hardcore-Left militants, operatives, ideologues and theoreticians when you, grossly derelictively group in the same herd libertarians such as my neighbor Jane, alongside hardened hardcore-Left operatives and ideologues, such as, for example, Obama, Ayers, H. Clinton, Valerie Jarret, Jeremiah Wrigt, Andrew "Andy" Stern, Axelrod, and those in the Congressional Conservative Caucus.

You better hit the books and learn to differntiatet between the softcore-Left (i.e., democratic to some extent, and encompassing 1- "bleeding-heart" liberals and 2- doctrinaire Keynesians, all of whom Lenin detested as "hinderers of revolutionary action", christening them "useful-idiots") and the hardcore-Left (i.e., anti-democratic, and fully incarnated in the ideolotical-marrow of the Democrat Party, and  encompassing fascists, social-democrats, democratic-socialists, Marxists, Marxist-Leninists (i.e., mainly the brutish Bolsheviks and the "burnished and scholarly" Western-Leninists aka "Western-Marxists"), and communistic-anarchists). By the way, Obama belongs in the Western-Marxists, althouhg he manifests frequent epidodes of atavistic Bolshevik hiccups.

Ideology-Economics Extremism of the Left

I LAUGHED AND LAUGHED TODAY (not!)

How ironic....I received a petition in the mail today to sign.  It was sent by a Christian organization to prevent the Socialist Democrats from forcing our churches to be silent on important and moral issues.  I laughed!  FORCE THEM TO BE SILENT?....THEY ARE AND HAVE BEEN SILENT ON EVERY GODLY ISSUE THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN HOTLY CONTESTED FOR OVER 40 YEARS!!!! Shame on our Pastors and Priests!!!!  for their laziness and apathy.  It's the very reason we are where we are today....our public schools...YES! they should have been watching what's been happening in the public schools for 40 years!!!  But their children didn't attend them.  90% of Christian/Catholic children attend them for their daily brainwashing/indoctrination/propagandizing by the Marxist Teachers and Professors Unions, which convert them to a mix of Christian / Atheistic Marxist Secular Humanism...and convert them helplessly, hopelessly as Socialist Liberal Democrat GreenParty voters.  WHEN WILL OUR CHURCHES EVER BE CONCERNED AGAIN ABOUT SUCH IMPORTANT ISSUES, OTHER THAN THE MONEY ONES.  JESUS IS DISGUSTED WITH THEM JUST AS HE WAS THE HYPOCRITES IN THE TEMPLE WHEN HE OVERTURNED THEIR TABLES.  SCRIBES AND PHARISEES, 95% OF THEM!  YES, GOD IS ANGRY....YES HE IS GIVING US OVER TO THE PEOPLE WE SHOULD HAVEBEEN FIGHTING AGAINST, FOR HIM!!!

Amen!

I'll say it again. Amen!

Doing Something

At least they are doing something even if it is for their own survival. The Suipreme Court and Congress should be doing this for the county's survival.
