Tennessee GOP Senator Alexander Has Done Nothing to Stop Obamacare

Lamar Alexander and Mitch McConnell
Our friend Michael Patrick Leahy, co-founder of BEAT LAMAR, today called-out Tennessee's establishment Republican Senator for his phony and disingenuous TV commercial on Obamacare.

“Senator Alexander’s recently released television commercial makes the false claim that he ‘stands up strong’ against Obamacare,” said Leahy.

“Such a demonstrably untrue claim deserves four Pinocchios,” Leahy stated. “At every significant step since its passage, Lamar Alexander has in reality served as the number one enabler of Obamacare in the Republican Party.”

Leahy pointed out that “Senator Alexander’s false claim that he has resisted Obamacare arises from a series of timid statements he made to President Obama in a Kabuki theater style joint press appearance held several weeks before Obamacare passed in 2010. Lamar Alexander posed for the television cameras that day with President Obama, but since its passage he has done nothing in four years to stop Obamacare.”

Noting that Alexander failed to stand with Ted Cruz when he opposed the adoption of a new budget unless Obamacare was defunded this past fall, Leahy said that “Lamar Alexander simply does not have the willpower, the energy, or the desire to stand up for conservative values.”

“At this critical time in our history, our country needs tough, dedicated fighters for the Constitution who will vigorously oppose the extralegal power grabs of the Obama administration on every front,” Leahy stated. “Lamar Alexander has proven he can’t do that. In fact, he is far more likely to be working with the Obama administration—he voted with the President 62% of the time—than he is to be working against it.”

“It’s clear to Tennesseans that Lamar Alexander stands for one thing, and one thing only: maintaining his own position, power, and prestige,” Leahy stated. “Tennesseans are ready to retire Lamar Alexander’s weary and predictable political act. Senator Alexander is so far past his prime, so out of tune with the desires of Tennessee voters to restore constitutionally limited government to our country that his most recent commercial has to reach back 30 years to his days as governor to find anything he has done that he can claim has helped Tennesseans.”

“It’s time for a real conservative to represent Tennessee in the United States Senate,” Leahy said. “That’s why,” he concluded, “ BEAT LAMAR and Tea Party groups across the state of Tennessee have endorsed State Representative Joe Carr to win the Republican Party’s nomination for Senate in the August 2014 primary.”
