GOP Falling Into The Obama–Reid Trap

Reid and Obama

In less than two months Harry Reid will be gone as Senate Majority leader and Republicans will control both houses of Congress for the first time since 2006. But the Democrats have already planned much mischief between now and when they cede control of the Senate and they are counting on the GOP’s desire to get out of town for Christmas to facilitate their plans.
Central to the Obama – Reid trap is the desire of the Republican leadership to quickly pass a long-term omnibus spending bill (that packages a group of appropriations bills into one big, 2,000+ page bill) to fund the government for the rest of the fiscal year.
The power of the purse remains the only tool the legislative branch has to rein-in the executive branch and, although Speaker John Boehner and his leadership team have been reluctant to use it – or at least use it effectively – it remains the one constitutional vehicle they have for enforcing the will of the people on our lawless President.
So quickly passing a long-term omnibus would effectively free Obama and Reid from any restraints on ramming through the confirmation of Cabinet and Sub-Cabinet appointees, dozens of liberal judges and implementing a lawless and unconstitutional “executive amnesty.”
Moreover, it would also deprive the newly elected Republican members of the House and Senate from making good on their campaign promises to oppose various elements of Obama’s agenda, especially amnesty for illegal aliens.
So the Obama -- Reid plan is simple: Bring Congress back into session, quickly pass a CR to fund the government for the next ten months and then have from the moment the omnibus passes until the absolute last minute before the new Congress is sworn in to work their will.
Why then would the Republican leadership, especially in the House, go along with such a transparent trap?
Well, the less charitable among us might conclude they don’t really want to have a bloody fight to stop Obama’s agenda, wrongly believing that, contrary to the results of the Gingrich era government shutdowns and the 2013 battle over defunding ObamaCare, such political battles “hurt the Republican brand.”
Or even worse, that they actually want Obama to proceed with his lawless plan to implement an “Executive Amnesty” because that would take off their shoulders the responsibility for giving the cheap labor wing of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce what they want.

And the muted response from Republican leaders to Obama’s announcement that he plans to grant 10-year work visas to unlimited numbers of Chinese immigrants certainly gives some credence to that theory.
As the signs point to Republican leaders blundering into the Obama – Reid trap, or walking in with one eye open, it falls to the conservative grassroots to demand action from Capitol Hill Republicans.
We urge you to contact your Republican Senator, Representative or Senator-elect or Representative-elect and tell them to oppose a quick long-term omnibus spending bill and to join Sens. Mike Crapo, R-ID; Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Mike Lee, R-UT; Pat Roberts, R-KS; Jeff Sessions, R-AL; and David Vitter, R-LA expressing opposition to President Obama’s announced intention to take unilateral executive action by the end of this year to lawlessly grant amnesty to immigrants who have entered the country illegally. (text follows)
Call or write your legislator today (the Capitol switchboard is 1-866-220-0044) tell Capitol Hill Republicans not to fall for the trap; it is time to stand tall and fight the Obama – Reid plan straight through to the beginning of the new Congress.

Senator Harry Reid
Majority Leader
S-221, The Capitol
Washington, D.C. 20510
Dear Leader Reid:
We write to express our alarm with President Obama’s announced intention to take unilateral executive action by the end of this year to lawlessly grant amnesty to immigrants who have entered the country illegally.  The Supreme Court has recognized that “over no conceivable subject is the power of Congress more complete” than its power over immigration. Therefore, President Obama will be exercising powers properly belonging to Congress if he makes good on his threat. This will create a constitutional crisis that demands action by Congress to restore the separation of powers.
As majority leader of the Senate, you have the responsibility of not only representing the citizens of your State, but also of protecting the Constitution through vigilant exercise of the checks and balances provided under the Constitution. Therefore, we write to offer our full assistance in ensuring expeditious Senate debate and passage for a measure that preserves the power of Congress by blocking any action the President may take to violate the Constitution and unilaterally grant amnesty; however, should you decline to defend the Senate and the Constitution from executive overreach, the undersigned Senators will use all procedural means necessary to return the Senate's focus during the lame duck session to resolving the constitutional crisis created by President Obama's lawless amnesty.
Sen. Mike Crapo, R-ID
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas
Sen. Mike Lee, R-UT
Sen. Pat Roberts, R-KS
Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-AL
Sen. David Vitter, R-LA
