Stop Nancy Pelosi? How About Stopping Boehner & McConnell?

Boehner Kisses Pelosi

Recently, one of our colleagues received a solicitation from Rob Simms, Executive Director of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) ringing the alarm that funds were needed to “stop Nancy Pelosi's momentum following their surprise victory in the Mississippi Special Election last week.”

Setting aside the fact that there was no Democratic “victory” in the Mississippi Special Election of May 12 – in a field of 13 candidates running in a “jungle primary’ the one lone Democrat got a few tenths of a point more than the leading Republican, meaning something like 83% of voters voted for a Republican versus the 17% that voted for the Democrat. This sets-up a June 2 run-off where the Democrat will be vaporized in a district Mitt Romney won by 25 points, unless the NRCC moves in and snatches defeat from the jaws of victory, but Simms’ email did get us thinking.

Who is the greatest threat to liberty and American exceptionalism?

The powerless Nancy Pelosi who presides ineffectively over the smallest Democratic House minority in over 80 years, or Republican Speaker John Boehner and Republican Senate Majority Mitch McConnell who have worked tirelessly to stymie conservative efforts to stop Obama’s lawless executive amnesty for illegal aliens, refused to use the constitutional power of the purse to thwart Obama’s far-left agenda, surrendered congressional power to a lawless president on the Iran deal and Trade Promotion Authority and personally attacked conservatives who objected?

And more to the practical point of what Mr. Simms might do with the money, were one to respond to his pitch, ponder this – in October 2014 the GOP ran over 10,000 ads promising to stop Obama’s amnesty order. GOP Senate candidates ran 35,000 ads on Obamacare in October 2014 alone, and thousands of ads promising to cut spending, end crony government deals for insiders, cut-off government funds for abortion and a host of other items on the conservative agenda – and none of it has happened.

The ads were, quite bluntly, well-crafted lies – and everyone on the inside of the Republican establishment knew it.

As our friend Brent Bozell said in his December 08, 2014 op-ed in The Hill “Some Republicans still have no clue why they were elected,” Time and time again we’ve heard Republicans declare war over Obama’s executive amnesty. Every Republican running anywhere screamed from the mountaintops that this illegal action would not be tolerated. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) promised to use the ‘power of the purse’ and Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said, ‘we will not stand idle while the president violates the rule of law in this country…’  That conviction and that pledge led them to a landslide victory on Capitol Hill…”

Yet none of these promises square with how the GOP leadership has actually conducted themselves once they gained the majority in Congress.

To our way of thinking Mr. Simms’ appeal on behalf of the National Republican Congressional Committee has it exactly backwards. What is needed is not another Republican who will “stop Nancy Pelosi’s momentum,” because she has none.

What is needed in Congress more than anything is not another empty vessel for the lies pedaled by the Republican establishment, but more principled limited government constitutional conservatives who will stop Boehner and McConnell in their headlong rush to surrender what is left of constitutional government and American exceptionalism to Obama and his far-left secular liberal allies.  We just hope District Attorney Trent Kelly, the Republican in the Mississippi 1st District Special Election, measures up.

Just goes to prove the old adage that "even if you put lipstick on it, it's still a pig. The question here is "Which one is the pig?".
