Conservatives: Unite Behind Mike Flynn For Congress In IL-18

Mike Flynn conservative candidate in IL 18 special election

The Special Election for Congress in Illinois House District 18 provides an excellent example of how the permanent political class in Washington maintains the power they have abused to run this great country into the ground and how one candidate – Mike Flynn – a full spectrum conservative with an unshakable commitment to governing according to limited government constitutional conservative principles could change that destructive dynamic.

Flynn’s opponent in the Republican Primary for the seat vacated by the disgraced Aaron Schock is Darin LaHood, an Illinois state Senator and the son of former Congressman and Obama Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

Ray LaHood, one of only three Republicans elected to the House in 1994 who did not sign the Contract with America, was one of the most reliable Big Government Republicans in Congress. The senior LaHood won the seat after serving from 1982 until 1994 as administrative assistant and ultimately the chief of staff to U.S. House minority leader Robert Michel – one of Washington’s true gentlemen, but a long time member of the House Appropriations Committee and another big spending, Big Government Republican.

While we don’t wish to visit the sins of the father on the son, the same political beliefs in Big Government, and support for the unbridled spending that has put America $18 trillion dollars in debt, run in a straight line through the careers of Ray LaHood and Darin LaHood.

And LaHood’s Washington-based support is reflective of his record as a loyal foot soldier of the Republican establishment and their big spending, Big Government ways.

In contrast to the Washington focused – and funded – LaHood campaign, conservative Mike Flynn has mounted a grassroots effort that has attracted attention, and support, from the broad spectrum of limited government constitutional conservatives in the district and across the country.

Flynn’s campaign has focused on reforming Washington, especially on spending, whereas LaHood’s campaign has focused largely on a commitment to delivering “stuff” to the District – or as we prefer to characterize it, bribing voters with their own tax dollars.

The tried and true election strategy of both political parties is bribing voters with their own tax dollars; it worked for Ray LaHood and it is expected to work for Darin LaHood. But multiply that by 435 members of the House and 100 Senators and you have today’s unsustainable federal spending.

And that in a nutshell is how we find ourselves $18 trillion in debt and why nothing will be done to address that debt if Darin LaHood is the Republican nominee and eventual representative for Illinois Congressional District 18.

As might be expected in a district Mitt Romney carried by over 20 points, LaHood is running as a “conservative,” but in our analysis his conservative credentials rest solely on a good record on right-to-life issues – he’s not a full spectrum conservative like Mike Flynn.

Social conservatives who might be looking LaHood’s way can vote for Flynn knowing that he will be equally as strong on their issues, and unlike LaHood, he will be an unrelenting opponent to the Big Government that is today destroying our economy, stifling job growth and is an existential threat to constitutional government and religious liberty.

Mike Flynn is a sixth-generation native of Central Illinois. He was born and raised in Quincy and his family have been small businessmen and farmers in Central Illinois for more than 150 years. Flynn’s attitude is one we respect and share: “Political office isn’t a career goal. It’s a temporary responsibility and obligation to defend and preserve our rights.”

We’ve been acquainted with Mike Flynn’s commitment to limited government constitutional conservative principles, and feel confident in endorsing him, because for more than 20 years, he’s been fighting for conservative reform in our country.  As a leader in the conservative reform movement, and an editor at Breitbart, Flynn has seen how Washington works and knows what it will take to make real change.  And unlike most of current Congress, he’s worked in business and knows what it takes to make a payroll while government regulates and taxes us to death.

Mike Flynn has garnered other endorsements from conservative leaders and organizations; Larry Pratt of Gun Owners of America, Red State’s Erick Erickson, conservative commentator Dana Loesch and Bill Hennessy to name a few.  But none was more persuasive than that of David Bossie of Citizens United Political Victory Fund (CUPVF), the affiliated PAC of Citizens United, who said “Mike Flynn is a conservative change agent who will promote pro-growth economic policies that will create jobs in Illinois… Out of control Washington spending by career politicians is pushing America to the brink of financial meltdown. Mike Flynn will confront the establishment. Darin LaHood will become part of the problem, not part of the solution.”

In accepting our endorsement Mike Flynn said, "I am honored to have the support of conservative leaders like Richard Viguerie who believe, as I do, that it is time to make DC listen. I appreciate the leadership Richard and his conservativehq.com team have provided on the conservative agenda.  The support of limited government constitutional conservatives will be key to winning the July 7, Special Election, and I appreciate the endorsement of www.conservativehq.com and look forward to their help in getting my message out across Illinois Congressional District 18."

We urge CHQ readers from across the country, but especially in Central Illinois, to support Mike Flynn’s campaign with their time, talent and money. You can do so by going to mikeflynnforcongress.com and clicking the contribute and get involved buttons.
