Marco Rubio’s Cynical Ploy on the Trans-Pacific Partnership

Presidential candidate Marco Rubio – the heir apparent to Big Government establishment Republican primary support now that Jeb Bush has faded into second tier status – is trying to replay his flip-flop on amnesty for illegal aliens in the Trans-Pacific Partnership debate (TPP).

Marco RubioConservatives will recall that Rubio, one of the architects of the hated “Gang of Eight” amnesty bill, that also gave billions to far-Left race-baiters like La Raza, later “distanced himself,” as the establishment media put it, from his own bill.

This didn’t mean he abandoned his support for amnesty – especially when he was speaking Spanish for a Spanish-speaking audience, it simply meant that he was cynically trying to make it look like he had rethought a position detested by the vast majority of Republican primary voters.

Now comes the debate on the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

After first declaring the TPP to be one of three essential “pillars” of a Rubio Presidency—the Florida Senator and presidential candidate is now taking issue with a Wall Street Journal news report that lists Rubio as supporting the unpopular Obamatrade pact he voted to fast-track.

After Ted Cruz, Donald Trump and Carly Fiorina all came out against the TPP, our friend Julia Hahn of Breitbart noted that a Wall Street Journal article stated: “Still backing the trade legislation are the party’s establishment wing candidates: Sen. Marco Rubio and former Gov. Jeb Bush of Florida and Govs. John Kasich of Ohio and Chris Christie of New Jersey.”

But observed Hahn, after the Wall Street Journal listed Rubio as supporting the pact, a new paragraph suddenly appeared at the end of the piece stating that “Mr. Rubio’s spokesman said that although he backed the bill granting Mr. Obama fast-track trade authority this summer, he has not decided whether to support TPP legislation.”

As we have observed when other politicians flip-flop, or just plain lie as those of us out in real America call it, Google is an unforgiving mistress.

Contrary to his spokesman’s statement, Julia Hahn documented that Rubio has explicitly articulated his support for the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

In an April op-ed, Rubio affixed his name to an editorial declaring that we “must… pass TPP.”

Rubio wrote:

“The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), discussed between President Obama and Prime Minister Abe this week, will further our strategic goals in Asia and increase prosperity at home. It will advance economic liberty and unleash free-market forces in the world’s most dynamic region… We must rebuild our own military capabilities, conclude and pass TPP, and renew our support for freedom and the rule of law in Asia. Too often over the past six years, U.S. leaders have spoken of their attention to Asia but failed to back up the rhetoric with action.”

Similarly, in an address to the Council on Foreign Relations in May of this year, Hahn brought to our attention that Rubio described TPP as the “second pillar” of his three-pillar foreign policy strategy.

“My second pillar,” Rubio declared, “is the protection of the American economy in a globalized world…  It is more important than ever that Congress give the president [Barack Obama] trade promotion authority so that he can finalize the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership.”

Following these pronouncements, as Julia Hahn documented, Rubio voted to fast-track TPP.

Marco Rubio cast the 60th and deciding vote for Trade Promotion Authority (TPA), a controversial fast-track mechanism for ramming trade treaties through Congress with minimum scrutiny, to clear the Senate’s filibuster – now he wants us to believe that he hasn’t made up his mind about whether he will support the disaster for America’s working families that his previous vote wrought?

Marco Rubio has made a career out of talking a good game on the conservative agenda and then giving a charming puppy dog smile as he abandons that agenda and throws his support to anti-constitutional, anti-conservative policies. He did it in the Florida House, when as Speaker he facilitated Jeb Bush’s vast increase in spending, he did it as a member of the Gang of Eight when he threw-in with Obama and Harry Reid on amnesty, and he’s doing it once again as he “distances himself” from the TPP and pretends to mull the pros and cons of a bill that will destroy the quality of life for millions of American families.

We urge you to call Congress TODAY; the Capitol Switchboard is 1-866-220-0044, tell them Marco Rubio is wrong and Senator Jeff Sessions is right; TPP must be taken off Fast-Track and handled according to regular order so the working men and women of American won’t be forgotten again. Click here to sign our petition to support Senator Sessions and protect American sovereignty and jobs.
