Escalation? U.S. Marine Jet Downs Syrian Plane

Multiple international news organizations have reported that a U.S. warplane shot down a Syrian army jet on Sunday in the southern Raqqa countryside. American sources say the Syrian jet had dropped bombs near U.S.-backed forces while Damascus says the plane was downed while flying a mission against Islamic State militants.

Reuters reports the U.S. Central Command later issued a statement saying the Syrian plane was downed "in Syrian planecollective self-defense of Coalition-partnered forces," identified as fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) near Tabqah.

It said that "pro-Syrian regime forces" had earlier attacked an SDF-held town south of Tabqa and wounded a number of fighters, driving them from the town.

Coalition aircraft in a show of force stopped the initial advance noted the Reuters report. When a Syrian army SU-22 jet later dropped bombs near the U.S.-backed forces, it was immediately shot down by a U.S. F/A-18E Super Hornet, the statement said.

Before it downed the plane, the coalition had "contacted its Russian counterparts by telephone via an established "de-confliction line" to de-escalate the situation and stop the firing."

The coalition does "not seek to fight the Syrian regime, Russian or pro-regime forces" but would not "hesitate to defend itself or its partnered forces from any threat," the statement said.

The U.S.-led coalition has in recent weeks escalated its aerial bombing campaign in northern Syria and Raqqa province. U.S.-backed forces have encircled the city of Raqqa and captured several districts from the militants reports Reuters.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that “all countries must fully respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria” but the BBC’s Steve Rosenberg in Moscow says that, given Russia is such a staunch supporter of President Bashar al-Assad, this is a muted response.

So far criticism in the United States has been equally muted, with most of it coming through social media.

Criticism from the Left was quick to build through social media.

The Washington Post’s Beirut bureau chief Liz Sly tweeted, “The US downs a Syrian plane after it attacked US-backed forces. A huge escalation, entirely inevitable.”

And far Left Democrat former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney tweeted “Holy Cow!!! US shoots down a Syrian government plane IN SYRIA!! The US is NOT invited; what are they doing...”

However, judging by the reaction on social media conservatives were not happy either. In email and tweets conservatives voiced concern saying:

Is the USA at war with Syria? Did I miss Congress approving it? USA just shot down a Syrian war plane

This is the dumbest thing yet!

Whoever authorized this is determined to destroy the Trump presidency. The culprit in the administration responsible for this must be rooted out before its too late.

Shooting down Syrian planes has zero to do with our national security except for weakening it by precipitating another unnecessary war in the Middle East.

Only Congress has the Constitutional authority to start another war. To allow the tail to wag the dog once again is to be complicit in madness.

It is unclear whether this latest incident represents a real “escalation” of American involvement in the war in Syria or is, as the Pentagon statement claimed, merely an act of self-defense to clear an attack on US “partner” forces.

Does the shooting down of the Syrian plane represent a dangerous “escalation” of America’s involvement in the Syrian civil war?

So far, conservatives seem to be breaking against deepening American involvement in the Syrian civil war. Please tell us what you think by using the comments section below to register your opinion.

This is Obama's mess.

Everything Obama and Hillary Clinton touched in the Middle East was an attempt to destroy Israel. Israel and Egypt had signed the Camp David Accord and had been peaceful with each other since the 1967 War. The area had to be de-stabilized for Obama (a Muslim by birth) to destroy Israel.
It started with the Arab Spring in Egypt when Obama backed the Muslim Brotherhood backed Morsi who had Mubarak thrown in jail. The Muslim brotherhood began killing Coptic Christians at will while they were in power, something that had not happened under Mubarak. Obama sent tanks and F-16 Fighters to Egypt to support the Morsi regime. Obama is the one who was all bent out of shape when the people of Egypt kicked the Brotherhood out. The mass killing of Christians stopped for the most part.
Libya, Momar Gadhafi had surrendered his nuclear and chemical weapons and was almost playing nice with the world except for shooting his mouth off now and then. The rebellion started, Obama waited, the Evening News was reporting more and more the infiltration of Al Qaida into the Rebel forces before Obama started to supply weapons. Gadhafi was killed and the disaster at Benghazi happened. I don't believe Obama wanted Gadhafi killed, remember when Obama shook hands with Gadhafi at the UN? Obama seemed to like the murderous Dictators of the world, Castro and Chavez included. Anyway, Libya must fall into the hands of the Extremists for Obama's plan to take out Israel to work.
Next was Syria. To surround Israel with enemies on all sides we (Obama) have to take out Assad. Christians were not being murdered under Assad and Assad would not attack Israel, Remember, Syrian Forces served with the coalition during Desert Storm. Then the Arab Spring comes to Syria and again the Evening News is reporting that Al Qaida has again infiltrated the Rebels in Syria. Which side of the conflict does Obama pick? Now the US starts to supply weapons to the rebels and two groups form, Al Qaida and ISIS. ISIS moves into Iraq to fill the void left when US Troops were ordered out by Obama. ISIS is killing Assyrian Christians indiscriminately and chased them up the mountain, remember what Obama did? One air drop of food and water and them move on, nothing to see folks. More killing more troop deployments, take the same ground again. All of this did not happen by chance. The US should never have gotten involved in Libya or Syria. Our best course of action now is to help shore up the defenses around Israel to help fight off everything Obama did to the Middle East.

No Reason Nor Legal Right for Continued US War in Syria

Syria is a a sovereign country and member of the United Nations and signer of the NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty).

US involvement with Saudi/Sunni anti-government force (including al Qaeda and an alphabet soup of terrorist guerilas) incursions into Syria is misguided from any strategic realist assessment. There is no threat to the United States from Syria. There is no American need for energy resources from the region.

US activity in Syria is in blatant violation: 1) of our Constitution; 2) of the UN Charter; and, 3) of the international law of nations.

I hope it is still within the possibility of our republic for our President Trump to stick to his advice to stay out of Syria; and, to put Americans first.

No reason to be there

Keep on arming Israel and let it be known very clearly that any incursions will incur our wrath as well as the Israelis own very capable response.
Arm the Kurds and any Christian groups fighting for their survival, whether in Iraq, Lebanon, or Syria. But. Stay. The. Hell. Out, ourselves.
Oh, and get the heck out of Afghanistan, and let the Taliban and the Pakistanis know very clearly that any attempt to interfere with our rapid and peaceful withdrawal will result a a swath of scorched earth from our bases in Afghanistan to the Arabian Sea.
When departing, remove or disable any large fighting equipment, missiles, bombs, etc., but disperse the small arms as widely as possible amongst the citizens, to disrupt any force attempting to rule the godforsaken place.
