Assault on America, Day 142: Memorial Day means honoring the American flag, not dissing it

Megan Rapinoe kneeling
Here we go again.

Heading into Memorial Day weekend, a time when the patriotic among us take special pause to remember those who gave their lives that this nation might live comes news of another stupid, entitled, selfish and pathetic “professional” athlete drawing attention to herself by kneeling during the playing of our national anthem before games. Only this time it isn’t a high profile player from a major media sport doing the non-verbal affronting -- it’s someone who straps on a uniform with “U.S.A” on it and is paid (more or less) by us taxpayers.

Speaking of U.S. women’s soccer player (and embittered hag) Megan Rapinoe, a woman so out-of-touch with reality she couldn’t possibly grasp what she’s done to herself, her team -- and her country. Jessica Campisi reported at The Hill, “U.S. soccer star Megan Rapinoe says she’s a ‘walking protest’ when it comes to the Trump administration, saying her decision to kneel during the national anthem is an ‘F you’ to the White House.

“’I feel like it's kind of defiance in and of itself to just be who I am and wear the jersey, and represent it,’ Rapinoe told Yahoo Sports. ‘Because I'm as talented as I am, I get to be here, you don't get to tell me if I can be here or not.’

“She added: ‘So it's kind of a good ‘F you' to any sort of inequality or bad sentiments that the [Trump] administration might have towards people who don't look exactly like him. Which, God help us if we all looked like him. Scary. Really scary.’”

No, what’s really scary is a cultural mindset that allows someone like Rapinoe to shoot off her mouth in a patently offensive vulgar way and insult the American flag without any kind of official censure from the people who oversee U.S. women’s soccer. Megan thinks her superior ability to play the sport grants her free license to spout political opinions and say anything she wants within the confines of her platform -- which clearly it doesn’t. I don’t see any players from Italy or France verbally bashing their presidents in a similar manner. What a twit.

Only a tolerant society like America’s would sanction such personal grandstanding in the name of “diversity” and “inclusion.” Rapinoe couldn’t have done any more damage to her organization if she’d lit a bonfire at midfield and set off a rocket propelled grenade into the opposite team’s goal. Who the heck is going to watch women’s soccer now? If you thought the NFL protests were destructive to the league’s brand, wait ‘til you see what Rapinoe’s middle-finger to Trump will do to a ratings-challenged enterprise like women’s soccer.

Megan suggests being able to kick a ball and run after it better than practically all other females in the United States entitles her to sabotage the entire team’s reputation in the eyes of citizens who would otherwise support the group and wish it well. Unlike with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who originally launched his anthem slights purportedly to protest police brutality (or some other inane and invisible cause), Rapinoe’s gesture is aimed specifically at Trump, the duly elected chief executive backed by tens of millions.

Conservative sports stars and other liberty-lovers didn’t like it when Barack Obama was elected president either, but to the sane and accepting it only meant folks of our ideological disposition had to work harder to persuade more people we’re right about issues. Hence, the Tea Party movement emerged in 2010 to highlight the Obamacare travesty and educate voters about government overreach. And to demand our leaders respect the Constitution.

What exactly is Rapinoe so upset about? Is she mad Trump administration officials are defying Democrat subpoenas to testify about “collusion and obstruction of justice” matters the Mueller report already thoroughly touched on and dismissed? Is she miffed Trump beat Hillary Clinton? Is she upset the economy is doing so well, unemployment is down to historic lows, regulations have been slashed and the environment is actually doing better and is cleaner under the president’s version of free market capitalism?

Or is Rapinoe ticked off because of Trump’s trade policy? Is she a Chinese (or Russian) plant intending to stir up controversy and amplify the already considerable opinion divide in this nation? Could it be she merely doesn’t like Trump’s personality? Is she #NeverTrump or just another knee-jerk reactionary leftist wacko who assumes it’s cool to be a Trump hater?

Does Megan keep a black Antifa hood concealed in her U.S.A. Soccer travel bag or under her locker’s stool?

Rapinoe’s background provides clues about her motivations. From Wikipedia, “Megan Anna Rapinoe ... is an American professional soccer midfielder/winger who plays for and captains Reign FC in the National Women's Soccer League. As a member of the United States women's national soccer team, she helped the U.S. win the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup, the gold at the 2012 London Olympics, and finish runners-up at the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup. Since 2018, she co-captains her national team alongside Carli Lloyd and Alex Morgan...

“Rapinoe is an advocate for numerous LGBT organizations, including the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and Athlete Ally. In 2013, she was awarded the board of directors Award by the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. She is sponsored by Nike, Samsung and DJO Global, and has appeared in multiple promotional pieces for clothing company Wildfang, as well as for Nike.”

I’d never heard of Rapinoe before this week, which could explain why she’s doing all of this two-bit pontificating in the first place. Endorsement deals for women’s soccer players -- no matter how skilled -- don’t approach the dollar values of their male counterparts in any sport… well, except for maybe women’s tennis. And I say this as the father of a daughter who played sports. It’s just not appreciated the same no matter how much we parents hoped it would be.

Pardon the pun, but Rapinoe’s “kicking” of Trump as a bigot who hates non-white and gay people is by far the easiest way for her to instantly embellish her personal endorsement profile and draw real money from the oh-so-politically correct corporate world that loves exploiting brainless athletes to sell more shoes and sports equipment to a certain segment of society. Would the average Joe -- or Josephine -- be inclined to purchase anything with a Nike logo because Megan Rapinoe endorses the company? Heck no! -- but if she “comes out” as a Trump-hater she’s instantly rocketed into Colin Kaepernick’s stratosphere of anti-American notoriety.

Along the way she’s offending the people who’d gladly root for the team just because it represents the country and its values -- excellence and accomplishment. Winning a gold medal or the women’s world cup is great, but who really wants to see the flag dissed while doing it? Isn’t Rapinoe being excessively selfish by injecting her own personal views into what is truly a national undertaking? After all, is it about her or the team?

Few athletes are irreplaceable. The U.S. team would do well to give Rapinoe a swift proverbial penalty kick to the hindquarters and demand she turn in her uniform. She doesn’t deserve to wear the red, white and blue with U.S.A. letters. Such loathsome behavior could cost the team millions in donations. Here’s thinking the move would be very popular.

Besides, wouldn’t we all be better off if there were more Americans like Tupac Mosley? Caitlin Yilek explained at The Washington Examiner, “A high school valedictorian in Memphis, Tenn., was awarded more than $3 million in scholarships before he graduated in May. Tupac Mosley, 17, received more than 50 scholarships and was accepted into more than 40 schools all while being homeless.

“’I knew that I had to make them proud. I knew that their investment was worth it and just show them that — yes, everything that you poured into me was worth $3 million and counting,’ Mosley said of his teachers during his speech.

“’Never let your current situation, whatever circumstances you’re going through, be a mountain that you can’t climb,’ he told fellow students.”

Mosley’s is a real inspirational tale of someone who didn’t blame institutional bias or personal hardships for his difficult plight. Do you think Tupac would kneel during the national anthem or use some other airy rationalization to pardon those who don’t shoot for the stars and then reach them?

Opportunities exist in America for those willing to embrace them and accept that the road to success is an arduous one. No system is perfect and there are no guarantees in life. But at least in America you’re protected by the freedoms enshrined in our Constitution and laws. All the more reason everyone should stand for the flag and show respect… every day.

Memorial Day is a time when we silently give thanks to those who are no longer here to receive it, a day when saluting the flag and paying homage to the values our country represents is of paramount importance. America is made of inspiring stories of personal achievement -- let’s all be thankful.
