Herd Immunity vs. Herd Mentality

Roger Kimball, American Greatness

“Herd immunity” is a settled concept in epidemiology. It occurs when “a large percentage of a population has become immune to an infection, whether through previous infections or vaccination, thereby providing a measure of protection for individuals who are not immune.” “Herd mentality,” on the contrary, provides immunity from independent thought. It protects a population from thinking clearly by spreading a spirit of conformity. It increases a people’s docility, thus rendering them more susceptible to the blandishments of usurping authority. Focus attention not on this year’s respiratory virus but on the wild, herd-like overreaction to the virus.

Investigate the Wuhan lab

Editors, Washington Examiner

Perhaps the coronavirus pandemic began in a Wuhan wet market, as is most commonly claimed. But it makes no sense to dismiss the alternate theory that it escaped from a Chinese laboratory. Considering the destructive consequences to both health and economies wrought by this pandemic, we need to get to the truth no matter where it takes us.China seems to have something to hide, and we must find out. The coronavirus has killed tens of thousands of people in the United States, poleaxed the nation's economy, and subjected our citizens to social isolation and unprecedented lockdowns. Pursuing the truth with an open mind is the least of our obligations.

Florida Has Beaten the ‘Surge’

Robert Stacy McCain, The American Spectator

The media have demonized DeSantis, an ally of President Trump, for his reluctance to impose a statewide lockdown, and the IHME forecast of a May 7 “peak” would seem to require an extension of the lockdown. The day-by-day trend in case numbers, however, contradicts the IHME projection. What will happen? Well, if Floridians keep social-distancing, and the number of new cases continues declining daily, not even the media’s hatred of DeSantis can conceal the gap between what the IHME predicts and the state’s own data. Hunker down and flatten that curve, Florida. I’ve got a couple of grandkids down there, and I’m planning to see them before June.

Beware the Left’s ‘Degrowth’ Movement

Stephen Moore, The Epoch Times

There is a radical and increasingly chic movement on the left called “degrowth.” The idea that economic growth and increased prosperity are the root CAUSE of massive ecological destruction and health pandemics. The agenda is to shut down industrial production and industries like fossil fuels, automobiles and airline travel that contribute to global warming. COVID-19 and the economy lockdown are seen as a kind of test run for the theory. Degrowth is defended as “a political, economic and social movement based on ecological economics, anti-consumerism and anti-capitalism.” It is wrong on so many levels one hardly knows where to start.

Campaigning in the Coronavirus Age: A New Frontier

Brad Parscale, Real Clear Politics

This is uncharted territory for political campaigns. President Trump has now assumed the role of a wartime chief executive against an invisible enemy while supporting millions of Americans who are facing health threats and economic hardship as a result of this pandemic. That’s good; the nation needs his steady, confident leadership. While we at the Trump Campaign realize that our fight must continue, we know that the president’s first duty is to protect the health of all Americans and preserve our economy’s ability to bounce back after this unforeseen, foreign-born crisis is over. Team Trump is doing our part while the president does his.

Pushing back against the little tyrants of the coronavirus

Tammy Bruce, Washington Times

Lo and behold, certain politicians have mistaken our willingness to adhere to social distancing and stay-at-home guidelines as a signal that they can do whatever they please. The unleashing of little tyrants in a time of crisis is not unusual. It is our responsibility as citizens to implement sensible and productive efforts, such as the federal coronavirus guidelines, to slow and eventually stop this pandemic. And we are doing exactly that. But what we will not agree to is the torching of the U.S. Constitution or the destruction of the country by people who seem drunk on unconstitutional power they imagine is afforded to them in a crisis.

An Economic Shutdown Based On... What?

Today there is widespread skepticism about the statistical projections of the coronavirus epidemiological models, even when we confine ourselves to the statistics about deaths, which are the most verifiable.  Maybe not on MSNBC and most of CNN, but then they live in their own universe.  There is evidence, however, that our political and financial establishments are becoming alarmed that we have crippled the economy on the basis of nonsense.

What Price Victory, In The Coronavirus War?

Patrick J. Buchanan, The American Conservative

The decisions American leaders are taking today, hurling scores of thousands of small businesses and millions of citizens toward bankruptcy, could start a rockslide of loan defaults that will start tumbling the banks as well. The decisions we take in this coronavirus crisis are defining us as a nation and a people. They are telling the world what we Americans will sacrifice and what and whom we will seek to save at all costs. They will tell us who and what is expendable and who and what is not. They will establish a hierarchy of values that may not correlate exactly with what we Americans publicly profess. Our decisions may tell us who we truly are.

The Worst Governor in America

Robert Stacy McCain, The American Spectator

Erratic, arbitrary, deaf to criticism — she has thoroughly botched Michigan’s response to this crisis, and yet, despite her blatant failure, there is talk that Whitmer is on the list of potential running mates for Democratic nominee Joe Biden. Such a choice would almost certainly destroy whatever hope Democrats still have of winning Michigan in November. A petition to recall Whitmer had nearly 150,000 signatures Sunday, and a Facebook group, “Michiganders Against Excessive Quarantine,” signed up a quarter-million members in a matter of days. Insanity is everywhere nowadays, and Michigan residents are cursed to be ruled by the Madwoman of Lansing.

The Rise of Karen-ism Means This Lockdown Nonsense Needs To End Soon

Kurt Schlichter, Townhall

This is not to say that the Chinese coronavirus pandemic is fake or unserious, nor that we should ignore it. There’s an economic ailment that most of us are painfully aware of, and there is a freedom ailment, where the Karens in everyday life and in the corridors of power are taking advantage of this crisis to let their fascist flag fly. We need to balance all the considerations in deciding when this ends. Safety is an important thing, but not the only thing. If the standard is no life can ever be put at risk, say good-bye to cars, to steak, to swimming pools, to any kind of freedom to make choices. And to the Karens, that’s a feature, not a bug.

The Coronavirus Is Exposing Little Tyrants All Over The Country

John Daniel Davidson, The Federalist

The response of some mayors and governors to the coronavirus pandemic in recent days has made it clear they think they have unlimited and arbitrary power over their fellow citizens, that they can order them to do or not do just about anything under the guise of protecting public health. We’ve now witnessed local and state governments issue decrees about what people can and cannot buy in stores, etc. That these officials need to be reminded of the Constitution, and in some cases restrained by federal judges, bodes very ill for America. We need leaders who don’t just care about protecting us from the pandemic, but also care about preserving liberty.

Democrats Are Using The Wuhan Virus To Reframe Big Government Tyranny As Patriotism

Democrats have (as usual) quickly identified the messages necessary to extract the maximum political utility out of the COVID-19 epidemic and the associated panic. If conservatives want to avoid having this panic turn into an opportunity for Progressives to move our politics and culture further to the Left, then we must take seriously the lessons of the Frontier Center’s "Progressive Patriotism" study.

AG Barr And Conservatives Striking Back At Church Lockdowns

Conservative patience with the extra-constitutional Wuhan virus lockdowns finally reached the breaking point on Easter, when elected officials across the country chose to use the alleged epidemic as an excuse to trample on religious liberty. Now conservatives, led by Attorney General William Barr, and conservative religious liberty organizations First Liberty Institute and Liberty Counsel are fighting back.

What the Media Can't See About COVID-19

David Catron, The American Spectator

The reflexive refusal of the legacy media to report any good news in the war on COVID-19 doesn’t apply to bad news about economic damage. “Finding a sizable audience has not been a problem for publishers … But with businesses paused or closed—and no longer willing or able to pay for advertisements—a crucial part of the industry’s support system has cracked.” This has led to thousands of furloughs and pay cuts at the country’s largest newspaper chains. The media should welcome good news about COVID-19 and join the rest of us as we pray that the pandemic reached its peak during Easter, and that there will be a public health and economic resurrection in May.

In Some Places, Easter Isn’t Being Celebrated. It’s Being Fined.

John Fund, National Review

A Justice Department spokesman announced last Friday that it is closely “monitoring” the situation. Two nonprofit organizations, the Alliance Defending Freedom and the First Liberty Institute, are filing lawsuits on behalf of several churches that have been threatened with criminal sanctions. Almost everyone agrees churches that openly flout social-distancing orders and allow members to be in very close proximity can’t be tolerated. But it is in times of crisis like this that many people most need the ministrations of clergy and the hope that religion provides. We shouldn't forget the reason the Founders made freedom of religion the First Amendment.

The Thin Façade of Authority

Victor Davis Hanson, American Greatness

Our modelers constantly downsize their bleak prognostications as “data changes”. Elite wisdom, which in its allegiance to the scientific method eventually is likely to find an antidote and vaccination against the virus, still fails us in so many other ways in which it should not, in part also because its high priests rarely face the consequences of their own ideological and scientific pronouncements. Whatever the end result, few at the WHO, CDC or the state health directors are going to lose their jobs in a way the small restaurateurs and Uber drivers most certainly will. Elites who make policy do not necessarily immediately need to plug back into a normal economy to survive.

Democrats Would Rather Blame Trump Than China for the Pandemic

Roger L. Simon, The Epoch Times

By focusing their attention on Trump, Democrats are in essence aiding the CCP in their nefarious activities that could well do immense damage to the future of our country and the world. But never mind. Trump must go. The Dem’s and the media’s objective is clearly to drive a wedge between Trump and the scientists to make the president seem like a greedy yahoo willing to sacrifice his fellow citizens for the good of the stock market. Like all political parties they still want power and Biden represents the past in every way imaginable. All they really have to generate excitement is how they can paint Trump. This should be alarming to our nation and the world.

AR-15 Build - Our CHQ Cabin Fever Project Part 2, Step 2, The Fire Control Group

Many would be gun buyers have found popular guns, such as the AR-15, to be as scarce as toilet paper. This temporary demand-based shortage of AR-15s has prompted many Americans to take the practical and perfectly legal (in most jurisdictions) alternative of building their own AR-platform rifle. Follow us in Part 2, Step 2 of our project as we assemble the fire control group to exercise our Second Amendment rights and ward off cabin fever by building an AR-15.

The Difference Between Texas And Indiana Republicans

We thought that the Republican Party was the Party of constitutional limits on government, but the panic created by the COVID-19 “epidemic” and the extra-constitutional actions of Republican public officials, such as Indiana’s Governor Eric Holcomb, have revealed that the urge to tyranny is not bound by political affiliation and in the end can only be constrained by the fidelity to the Constitution of individual office holders, such as Texas’ Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Let’s Keep Score

Adam Guillette, President of Accuracy in Media, is keeping score on the worst of the establishment media's lies and fake news. This week he has identified The New York Times, Newsweek and it's reporter Benjamin Fearnow, and Buzzfeed as among the worst outlets for promoting Communist Chinese propaganda, lies and fake news about the Wuhan virus and conservative talk radio host Erik Erickson.
