The Dignity Czar Police State

Our colleague Mark J. Fitzgibbons has a new post up on American Thinker detailing the reign of terror that Oregon’s “Dignity Czar,” Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian, has loosed upon Christians in that state, but especially against Christian bakers Aaron and Melissa Klein, for exercising their rights of conscience and refusing to bake a “wedding” cake for a same-sex “marriage.”

Modern Sin: Holding On to Your Belief

Charlotte Allen, The Wall Street Journal

On Tuesday the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Obergefell v. Hodges, the case that asks whether the Constitution requires states to allow same-sex couples to marry. Four days before the hearing, in Oregon, an administrative-law judge proposed a $135,000 fine against Aaron and Melissa Klein, proprietors of the Sweet Cakes bakery in Gresham, for the “emotional distress” suffered by a lesbian couple for whom the Kleins, citing their Christian belief that marriage is between a man and a woman, had declined to bake a wedding cake in 2013.

The War on the Private Mind

There are three problems with rewarding those who use accusations of bigotry as a political cudgel. First, those who seek to protect religious liberties are not bigots, and going along with false accusations that they are makes one a party to a lie. Second, it is an excellent way to lose political contests, since there is almost nothing — up to and including requiring algebra classes — that the Left will not denounce as bigotry. Third, and related, it encourages those who cynically deploy accusations of bigotry for their own political ends.

Religious Persecution: First Freedom Remains Under Global Siege

Christians continue to be the most persecuted faith, and were penalized or harassed in various ways in 102 countries in 2013. Jews suffer disproportionately, targeted in 77 nations yet making up just .2 percent of the world’s population. The Middle East, dominated by Muslim states, shows the greatest tendency toward persecution and intolerance.

Changing the Rules, Changing America: The Senate and Judicial Supremacy

Over the past 60 years, liberals have stealthily and intermittently begun confirming radical activists to the courts, consistently using Senate procedure to shut conservatives out of the federal nomination process while creating the illusion that they are filibustering. The result: liberal judges who legislate from the bench. Call your Senator now and urge him to oppose Obama's 9th Circuit Court nomination, Michelle Friedland.

Brewer Should Sign the Religious Liberty Legislation

Erick Erickson, Red State

In the name of tolerance, liberal activists believe that if you do not worship at the altar of gay marriage, your business must be shut down — you must be punished. Sadly, they are also winning in court and that's why Arizona's SB 1062 must be signed into law.
