Conservative Movement Leaders Oppose Repealing the Hyde Amendment

For nearly fifty years, the Hyde amendment has received bipartisan support as a national policy to ensure that U.S. taxpayers did not pay for abortions. Hyde-related policies have

been consistently applied in other federal programs to protect the vulnerable at home, abroad, in research, and to protect the conscience rights of medical providers who object to abortions.

But despite the broad bipartisan consensus and the national federal support for these policies, House Democrats have for the first time passed spending bills without them, raising the possibility that millions of Americans who are deeply and profoundly opposed to abortion will find their tax dollars used to subsidize the practice.

Over 100 leaders of the conservative movement have signed a letter urging all conservatives, and anyone who values the sanctity and dignity of human life from conception until natural death, to oppose spending legislation which does not contain the Hyde amendment and key related pro-life policies.

Text of the letter and list of signers follows:

July 20, 2021

Washington, DC

Conservatives believe that the sanctity of human life, including the value of every child, should be honored and protected by our laws. We are deeply opposed to efforts to strip the Hyde amendment and other long-standing pro-life provisions from federal law.

For nearly fifty years, the Hyde amendment has received bipartisan support as a national policy to ensure that U.S. taxpayers did not pay for abortions. Hyde-related policies have been consistently applied in other federal programs to protect the vulnerable at home, abroad, in research, and to protect the conscience rights of medical providers who object to abortions.

Over decades, both Democrat and Republican presidents have signed these protections into law – protections that were, for years, supported by President Biden in the United States Senate.

But despite the broad bipartisan consensus and the national federal support for these policies, House Democrats have for the first time passed spending bills without them, raising the possibility that millions of Americans who are deeply and profoundly opposed to abortion will find their tax dollars used to subsidize the practice.

The Hyde amendment and its related policies are estimated to have saved the lives of 2.4 million babies since its inception. Revoking the Hyde amendment, and upending the bipartisan consensus that has supported its application, is a drastic step that shreds any vestige or pretense that Democrats are anything but radically pro-abortion.

We urge all conservatives, and anyone who values the sanctity and dignity of human life from conception until natural death, to oppose spending legislation which does not contain the Hyde amendment and key related pro-life policies.

The Hyde Amendment has had bipartisan support for fifty years? And no one thought to begin the procedure to make it a Constitutional Amendment? It sounds like Congress is more interested in an issue to run on rather than a situation that can be corrected with the same bipartisan support that has had it included in spending bills for decades. Or perhaps it's just too profitable a cash cow of an issue for foundations that survive on contributions.

This is just the beginning. Things will get much, much worse if the left is allowed to prevail.

This one is personal for me. My son was almost aborted before my wife and I were blessed by God and able to adopt him. Thinking of not having him in our lives the last 30 years is something I cannot fathom. His smile lights up the room--we'd be lost without him.

Democrats are Godless and soulless. Anyone who opposes infanticide (abortion) but votes for a Democrat in any election is sadly uninformed. Elections have consequences. This is the ultimate proof.

I, and many Americans want to save our little babies from the heinous act of abortion. Please keep the Hyde Amendment in tact. God Bless America and God Bless our little

unborn babies. Darlene Harris
