The Right Resistance: There’s no rhyme nor reason for Never Trump to support Kamala now

“No, seriously. How dumb must you be to still be a Never Trumper in 2024?” The words hung in the air as a politically astute friend posed the query the other day, the person’s partisan longings exposed by his very-forward uncertainty which heavily implied the answer.

It’s obvious: pretty dumb.

It’s not that said friend was one of those mind numbed zombies the establishment media swears is the typical Donald J. Trump devotee, the stereotypical type of minority despising, racist, sexist, immigrant bashing, bigoted, homophobic, anti-woke culture warrior who earnestly wishes the country would travel back in time to the 1950’s (or whenever it was when hopelessly backwards Americans clung to guns and religion and thought that culture was actually about faith and belief and the words of the Bible instead of “feelings” and self-awareness.. like today) so as to restore our nation back to the way it once was.

Or, to put it more succinctly, to Make America Great Again.

No, my friend was commenting on a report about members of the Never Trump class of Republicans that’s dwindling in numbers yet increasing in media stature by maintaining their intractable stance towards the last Republican president, the one who single-handedly took on a party establishment that had dominated since Ronald Reagan’s days and couldn’t/wouldn’t see fit to alter the GOP’s disastrous self-destructive direction during the pre-Trump period.

And it’s also not that Trump has emphatically won over all his skeptics, either. The former White House occupant and 2016 and 2020 Republican party nominee has shown a remarkable inability to change some of his more destructive (including to armchair experts like each one of us) habits and obsessions, which led smart longtime conservatives like Daniel Oliver at American Greatness to openly question whether Trump is even capable of winning this year.

The vast majority of those conservatives who remain wary of Trump and his uneven personality or aspects of his populist-centered platform won’t go so far as to threaten to pull their vote from him, but one can’t help but surmise that the Trump campaign could do better in its outreach to this not insignificant portion of Republican voters. Most of these folks aren’t blueblood GOP ruling elites who back wishy-washy wusses like Mitch McConnell in their desperation to hold onto the Chamber of Commerce lobby. They’re salt-of-the-earth citizens who fear Trump’s unwillingness to control himself will produce an undesired result: President Kamala Harris.

Nevertheless, there are reports of RINOs hightailing it over to the dark (Democrat) side. In an article titled “More than 200 Bush, McCain, Romney aides endorse Harris”, Alex Gangitano reported at The Hill:

“More than 200 former aides to the three GOP presidential nominees who preceded former President Trump in 2016 — former President George W. Bush, former Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) — endorsed Vice President Harris on Monday.

“The majority of the group also endorsed President Biden in 2020. The group wrote a letter announcing the endorsement, USA Today first reported.

“The letter said it was a reunion of sorts from 2020, though it added that additional Bush alumni in particular were added to the group this cycle that are opposing Trump and backing Harris. ‘Of course, we have plenty of honest, ideological disagreements with Vice President Harris and Gov. Walz. That’s to be expected. The alternative, however, is simply untenable,’ the Republicans wrote.”

Untenable, RINOs? What’s untenable is the prospect of elevating a presidential candidate – and her China-loving, Tampons-in-boys-bathrooms, military service exaggerating, gun grabbing running mate – to perform the executive functions of the United States, a pair who don’t give a hoot about individual liberties (except abortion) and don’t even themselves know what they believe. At least according to their recent policy statements.

These wayward “Republicans” may make news in endorsing Kamala Harris, but if you asked him, here’s guessing Donald Trump would much rather have the backing of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard than the entire list of phonies, turncoats, bitter neoconservatives and homeless partisans that now publicly back cackling Kamala and Tampon Tim.

Their animus against Trump goes much deeper than mere style differences. They’re dead set against adopting the new populist/conservative orientation of the Republican Party, and what they couldn’t secure at the ballot box they’re taking out in supposedly damaging opposition to Trump. Remember how former Rep. Adam Kinzinger spoke at the Democrat National Convention last week? The Illinois collaborator served along with the disgraced Liz Cheney on Nancy Pelosi’s January 6 Commission-farce, where he and his cohorts spent months trying to turn the post-election riot into an “insurrection” even though the participants themselves didn’t carry firearms.

Even the patriot army in the Revolution carried highly inaccurate smoothbore muskets to challenge King George III’s army. The January 6 crowd wouldn’t have gotten far if their intention was to depose the Congress. Yet the smear job continues.

So what perpetuates the Never Trump animus against the Republican nominee? As a group, they appear to be concerned about Trump’s “threat to democracy”, but they neglect to define exactly what the “threat” might be. Unlike cackling Kamala, Trump won his nomination the old- fashioned way by appealing to Republicans for their votes and besting all of his rivals. And for as much negative publicity as Trump has endured the past eight years, it was no small feat to retain the backing of tens of millions of Republicans.

Everyone could’ve gone the route of the Never Trumpers. But they didn’t.

Don’t overlook that many of Trump’s 2016 supporters came to get behind him because he represented an “anyone but her” choice against Hillary Clinton. Back then, the naysayers held out because they feared Trump would serve as a liberal Trojan Horse storming through the walls of the conservative city, destroying the Republican Party from the inside.

Not only did this not happen, Trump governed as the most conservative president well, since Reagan. Trump made good on his promise to strengthen the military, enforce an America-First foreign policy, stand up to America’s enemies without committing the nation to a major war, cut taxes and appointed Supreme Court justices who interpret the original intent of the Constitution rather than reach deep into a magic bag of tricks to find new “rights” that were never there.

Trump was no diehard abortion opponent, but he did become the first president to speak at the National Right to Life March.

Trump’s fiscal record wasn’t stellar, but if the RINO contingent is now supporting Kamala Harris and her big government boondoggle programs, they’re truly not concerned about federal spending either. Harris is a big socialist tax and appropriator like the rest of the redistributionist Democrats, and to throw their support behind her shows that their feints towards solvency are merely lip service in pursuit of gullible votes.

The RINOs also cite free trade as a reason to dislike Trump, since the career real estate developer/tabloid celebrity/reality TV star-turned politician has let it be known that he plans tariffs for foreign actors who don’t play fair. Many Trump-supporting conservatives still adhere to a free trade philosophy, but the candidate’s position isn’t a deal-breaker.

Most “Republicans for Harris” adherents do as they do because they’re afraid of losing their foreign policy sway over the Republican Party. With Trump, they understand that the days of “spreading democracy” across the globe are numbered – or ended. The RINOs portend to be afraid of Vladimir Putin, but if the Russian dictator is unable to subdue a less powerful neighbor like Ukraine, how would he invade and capture a NATO protected Europe, which is many times larger, wealthier and more populated?

It's the Never Trumpers and their philosophies who are outdated. Trump might not be the most diplomatically delicate of American leaders, but he’s certainly more effective than senile Joe Biden. And what would cackling Kamala Harris do if she became president? Laugh her way to American power? The U.S. military can’t even meet recruitment goals any longer.

Besides, do the “Republicans for Kamala” people no longer support Israel? Have they suddenly developed a soft spot for Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas? Is Adam Kinzinger out supporting the pro-Palestinian protesters across the country?

And if John McCain were alive today, would he find a home in the “Republicans for Harris” group?

The Never Trumpers are yet to answer these questions, yet they receive plenty of “See I told you so!” coverage from the establishment media.

The truth is, the Republicans supporting Harris, as they did senile Joe Biden four years ago – they might as well stay in the Democrat party, because they’re not welcome in the MAGA based GOP any longer. Enough time has gone by and enough events have transpired to show that Trump isn’t a threat to anything – except RINO representation within the GOP. The number of gutless Charlie Dent/Liz Cheney Republicans still active in the party has dwindled to practically nada.

Never Trumpers have nothing left but to whine and complain and beg for the establishment media to toss them coverage bones whenever the Washington ruling class is searching for Trump haters. Or if the hags on “The View” need a Republican to say mean things about the party nominee and his running mate.

George W. Bush was president twenty years ago. He left office with historically low approval ratings that have only since been revived by how awful and destructive his Democrat successors were.

So, to answer the original question at the beginning of this column, you have to be pretty dumb to be a Never Trumper these days. The best arguments for turning against Trump have all fallen by the wayside. Heck, even Nikki Haley backs Trump now. It’s well past time to jump aboard the train – or simply get out of the way.
