Principled limited government constitutional conservative Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert (TX-1), announced Monday that he will run for Texas Attorney General against good old boy network Republican incumbent Ken Paxton.
Gohmert's decision comes after he asked on an exploratory campaign website for 100,000 citizens to donate $100 to his campaign, with a goal of reaching $1 million by Nov. 19. The GOP lawmaker launched the website on Nov. 9, saying the proper documents had "been filed to seek donations."
"I had announced a couple of days ago that if I could raise a million dollars that I would run … for attorney general, and as of now, the money, it's been raised. I will be running for the Texas Attorney General's job," Gohmert said during an appearance on Newsmax Monday.
"We need a Texas Attorney General whose top attorneys working for him have not found it necessary to send a letter to the FBI urging an investigation into corruption of their boss," the website says.
"We have got to control our borders. There's more that needs to be done. There's more that the attorney general's office could do. And so, that's one of the issues that has concerned me greatly, including election integrity. I feel like our attorney general could — should have done more," Gohmert said.
When Gohmert joined the Republican field, it already included commissioner of the Texas General Land Office George P. Bush, former Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman and Texas Republican State Rep. Matt Krause.
However, Gohmert’s formidable candidacy has already begun to narrow the field; shortly after Gohmert's announcement Monday evening, state Rep. Krause said he was leaving the primary to instead run for Tarrant County district attorney. Krause said he planned to support Gohmert for attorney general.
At a time when the elected Republican leaders of the House and Senate regularly fail to lead on the conservative agenda – indeed they are often secretly or openly on the other side – one Member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. Louie Gohmert, has made himself our indispensable leader and spokesman.
From the border wall, to the right-to-life, to the repeal and replacement of Obamacare, to defending the Second Amendment, to cutting spending there is hardly an issue that Rep. Gohmert has not organized a Special Order, introduced the conservative alternative or taken to the floor to make an impassioned vote-moving speech.
But leadership is more than just being out front when the cameras are on, and Louie Gohmert’s leadership behind the scenes is just as powerful and committed to doing what’s right as it is when the spotlights are on.
More often than not when House Republicans actually stand up for the little guy or take on and win a seemingly lost cause, it is Louie Gohmert who inspired and organized the effort.
Louie has been at the forefront of the battle to protect the constitutional rights of the January 6 detainees, he’s fought for the release of information about the killing of Ashli Babbitt and for accountability for her death, and for a real investigation into 2020 election irregularities.
Even more importantly, Louie Gohmert has been a steadfast advocate of recognizing that the Constitution is the law that governs government.
Too many elected officials seem to see the Constitution as a quaint anachronism – something you pay lip service to when you are sworn in, but quickly forget when it poses inconvenient obstacles to exercising government power.

Texas, along with Florida, is one of the last bulwarks of liberty in America. Who holds public office there matters, and public confidence in those officeholders matters even more. We think Ken Paxton has lost the public’s confidence and thus forfeited the Republican nomination and our support for reelection.
Louie Gohmert is one of America’s indispensable leaders. We are sad to see him leave the House of Representatives, where he has done so much good work, but the Lord has called him to another task, and we are proud to support him and do everything we can to make sure he wins the Republican nomination for Texas Attorney General and is elected Attorney General of Texas.
